Last poll, I promise. This time, I want to ask about names for GNU/Linux that bother you, i.e. names you definitely don't want people using to refer to the GNU/Linux system.
The options listed in the first question are:
"GNU/Linux": Expresses that the system is a combination of the GNU...
I didn't start this poll because I want to convince you to say "GNU/Linux", or to support free software. That's not possible. This is an open source community; I accepted that a long time ago. It's why I stopped posting here. (Or rather, I stopped posting here because I found it to be more...
Not sure how that's relevant. I made a point of not giving any options for how you pronounce each of "GNU" and "Linux", and the only option in the poll for pronouncing "Linux" is the correct way Torvalds says in that video.
Distros not endorsed by the FSF are not "non-GNU". They have just as much (approximately) of GNU as FSF-endorsed distros, and they are still GNU/Linux. The FSF endorses GNU/Linux distros based on whether or not they meet the Guidelines for Free System Distributions.[0]
The FSF still makes a...
EDIT: Poll removed; see http://boards.openpandora.org/index.php/topic/14171-names-for-gnulinux-that-bother-you/ for a similar, but more useful poll.
Slightly different from another poll, I want to hear what sounds better in your opinion when spoken. The options:
"g'noo slash lih-nuks" (GNU...
The Hurd is unstable (prone to crashes) and nowhere near as good as Linux when it comes to hardware support. I would never recommend it to anyone wanting to use an OS for actual work, and I would never use it. "No sound", though, is a result of not communicating with sound cards properly, and...
Or be unhappy that people are doing bad things for the bus (making GNU/Linux less free) because they don't know the original purpose for building it.
GNU/Linux, as it is today, is not "mission accomplished". People are still using proprietary software. The cause of freedom is helped by people...
I don't think it's overstating it. Android is nothing like GNU/Linux. The kernel only defines how the system talks to the hardware, not what the system is like for users.
It's not really laziness, it's just there not being a need. The same thing is true for a window manager; X worked fine, so there was never one developed for GNU.
Android and GNU/Linux are two completely different systems. Just because something can be replaced doesn't mean it's irrelevant. It's...
EDIT: This originally asked for favorites, but I've changed it to what names you like, as a multiple-choice question. I think that's more interesting. The choices are:
"GNU/Linux": Expresses that the system is a combination of the GNU operating system and Linux. Has been misinterpreted by many...
The Stellar Game Engine (SGE, pronounced like "sage") is a free/libre/open-source game engine for Python, implemented currently via Pygame, though I intend to develop other implementations (particularly Pyglet and PySDL2) at some point in the future.
I haven't done extensive testing of SGE on...
Oh, OK, so you'll be offended if I say "rapists are unethical", then?
But anyway, if you read "proprietary software developers are unethical" out of anything I said, it was a miscommunication. I don't condemn people; I condemn actions. That isn't to say that I don't judge people by their...
I never said that I hate you guys. I said that I'm not really interested in this community anymore.
I do think this topic has become such a shithole, what with half of the thread being about attacks on character, that a new topic is justified. I think giving SGE its own topic in the Python...
No. This is what ZXDunny said:
He didn't say that the problem was that I said that I "judge" proprietary software developers. He said that the problem was that I called proprietary software unethical.
Also, in your emphasis of that part of the sentence, you forgot about the part where I said...
There is no reason a statement that something is unethical should ever be offensive to anyone. None of you will be offended by any of the following statements... or at least, I don't think you will:
- Murder is unethical.
- Rape is unethical.
- Totalitarian regimes are unethical.
- Torture is...
That's not what blackmail is. You are stretching the meaning of the word "blackmail" to include something that it is not, so that you have a convenient way to attack my character.
Why are you making out a statement of my opinion about ethics to be "underhanded tactics"? The only underhanded...
EDIT: Franko, as I said before, it's free as in freedom, not price. Price is a completely separate issue. Free software means you have freedom in your computing.
Richard Stallman, and then later the Free Software Foundation, used to sell tapes with GNU Emacs (which is free software) on them for...
Yes, I did read it entirely. The only difference is that "emotional blackmail" would be blackmailing your emotions somehow, or something. Sorry, but using a modifier doesn't mean you get to use a word to mean something completely different than what it means. Blackmail is a type of threat...
Wow, I didn't expect a discussion to erupt without my involvement... frankly, I'm uninterested in whether or not ethics are subjective, so I won't get involved, but if you think they are, then just accept that proprietary software is unethical from my point of view. If you don't think ethics are...
