    SoC: Back and forth!

I don't, because it does not matter what the Android guys did for which reasons. Also, even though native code wasn't supported right from the beginning on Android, they may very well have considered to include it at some point from the very beginning. Maybe their choice was arbitrary or their...

    SoC: Back and forth!

How about asking Intel about that? Because there are lots of different Android devices, with lots of different CPUs with different features. It is quite a different situation there.

    SoC: Back and forth!

This matches with what I have been remembering about my tries of getting the driver to work on the various userlands I have been playing with on the Pandora. Of course I could have completely missed that there was a hardfloat driver for the old OMAP3, but that would have been a little strange...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Why is it that the Pandora userland is using softfloat then? That's sad to hear. It could very well have that. Usually there are device specific configurations in the kernel where this stuff (LEDs and other stuff connected to GPIOs, etc.) is configured. Actually, this part of the kernel is...

    SoC: Back and forth!

LTS does not make it less old. It does not get any new features. Also LTS support ends eventually. Even though the kernel part of the graphics driver is open source, the PowerVR driver still enforced the use of soft float in the userland. So even when the kernel part of a driver is open source...

    SoC: Back and forth!

That was to be expected. ED presented the Pyra with an OMAP5 development board, so the SoC choice seemed to have been made, so there was no reason for people to ask about other possibilites. The PowerVR issue is one of the biggest concerns with the OMAP for me as well. For me it does not matter...

    SoC: Back and forth!

I did not say they would come automatically, and I certainly did not mean that. You have to at least encourage them somehow or simply ask, maybe offering Pyra development boards to skilled people, like it was the case with the Pandora. What I was trying to say is, that you should probably not...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Of course Intel offers support for their products. It does not matter where you buy the chips eventually. They even offer things like analyzing your schematics. Maybe so, maybe not. You probably all remember that ED has recently been presenting the Pandora (and the Pyra) at FOSDEM, which is a...

    SoC: Back and forth!

If? There is no question about that. Just go to mouser and search for the chip. You can buy it right away. What has Intel to do with Samsung anyway? When Samsung does not sell its SoC through resellers, you obviously cannot buy it there. Such a statement is wrong per definition. Some things...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Do you even read, what people write? There is no need to buy anything from Intel directly. You can buy those SoCs from resellers (even in single quantities). Intel would have to stop selling their chips to all resellers, which is extremely unlikely to happen. Why would they do such a thing...

    SoC: Back and forth!

The Z3770 supports the VT-x virtualization extension, so running VirtualBox (or QEMU/KVM) would be possible and should perform well.

    SoC: Back and forth!

Both the Linux kernel as well as Mesa releases happen more often than those hardware releases. This actually is pretty absurd. Especially the Android part. Intel wants companies to actually use their chips (yes, also on Android not only Windows), so they have to supply working drivers. Btw, the...

    SoC: Back and forth!

If you would have followed the thread a little further, you would have noticed, that someone there actually has sucessfully used the Intel driver with the Z3770 GPU on X. What makes you think that? In recent years, Intel has actually been pretty quick with releasing driver updates and supporting...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Actually, if you look at the OMAP5 datasheet and check the table 3-2 (maximum current ratings), you'll see that the OMAP can even consume a lot more peak power than 6 W. For example, for the vdd_mpu domain a maximum current of 6460 mA has been specified, which at 1.5 V supply voltage is well...

How about open source drivers for the whole SoC?

    SoC: Back and forth!

Do not mix up maximum power draw, TDP and SDP. You can't compare those. The TDP as well as the SDP is well below 6 W (4 W TDP, 2 W SDP). So in terms of typical power consumption those plattforms are actually pretty close. Those TDP / SDP numbers are not some numbers made up for advertising, but...

    SoC: Back and forth!

We all know that you hate Intel. That's okay, you can hate whatever you want, but can't you just stop spamming all threads when discussions about x86 or Intel come up? If you have any real arguments, go ahead and post them. It doesn't look like you do, though.

    SoC: Back and forth!

Actually when you check the website, Dell says that a 18 Wh battery has been used there to achieve the 9.9 hours runtime. The Pandora battery has about 15 Wh, so it is not that far away. With the smaller Pyra display one could probably have the same runtime.

    SoC: Back and forth!

Internally even those CISC CPUs are pretty RISC-like these days anyway. I fully agree that you should not trust the manufacturers and their numbers, but that is true for all of them. I still think that the Anandtech comparison is pretty objective. Also, when considering to use any of these SoC...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Oh, that was not what I meant. I do not doubt that ARM games might be more optimized in terms of ressource usage than the average PC game. That's probably the case, because of the reasons you mentioned. What I was trying to say is, that power consumption of those x86 SoC will not be that much...
