Hey all,

My first post but its a goodun!!

My GP32 that I got at Christmas has killed 6 128mb SMC's in 4 weeks. Why is this happening. I have used various brands, cheap ones, really expensive ones and they still die. I am at my wits end and the GP32 is really heading for ebay!!! I have only a 64mb card left that is still alive. Does anybody have any ideas on what is happening. I am not pulling the card out when the unit is on and I don't use a memory card reader. Any advice is appreciated.

I know this might be a dumb suggestion, but are you certain you are inserting the cards into the GP32 in the right direction? be sure that the golden thing is pointed towards the front of the unit.

And also, have you formatted the cards? They won't work if you don't. How exactly do you know that they are "killed"?

They have formatted them with the provided software and thats fine but they just die after a week or so. Very very strange. Still no idea why.

AHA! kinda sorta the same problem as mine. its most probably something to do with the card reading thiingie in the gp32 itself, rather than the software . send it back, as it happens mine is on its way back to gbax right now.

Bummer!

Thats a bit of a git. I got mine from Lik-Sang and I can't even find an email for them on their site!

This is really getting to me, I think I will just put it on ebay and hope for the best.

Thanks anyhoos :(

You have to format them? Why? I have never ONCE formatted an SMC, I just take them out of the box put into the reader and start adding files/directories. I have over 10 cards filled with stuff and never had one go bad. Formatting is not the problem.

I know you don't have to format them technically, but he said he didn't have a card reader, so he would have to format them with the manager. ;)

Oh, and I'm pretty certain Lik-Sang will replace your unit or at least give you your money back. They're a very good company.

The case might be too tight and taking (scratching) the coating off the SMC, i've seen this once before, many months ago, it will kill an smc after several uses.

Try making the case looser... worth a try.

Ever tried using a card reader? My 64Mb SMC dies sometimes, but my digital camera (Olympus C-120) reads SMCs too, so all I have to do is insert the card, connecting it, copy what was on it to the computer and format it in Slubman FW... :)

You know, that makes a whole lot of sense. I think I will trim down the GP32's SMC port.

Thanks

Have you been using the cards in anything else?

I have an MP3 player that takes SMCs, and the software that comes with it uses some weird file format that neither the GP or windows can see. If I use a card in my MP3 player, anytime I try to use it in the GP or in a card reader the card looks empty and error messages appear.

The fix for me was to delete all files and format the card using the MP3 player software, then format a second time using GPManager / PCLink / Windows.

Good luck, hope the problem works out for you.
