Mentioned this in the Ideas Board already, but some other people might be interested (who knows?) - I posted sources to GPnese - the Japanese/English dictionary today. Might actually be helpful for people looking to develop Japanese enabled applications on GP32. Download at..

..and also feel free to mirror anywhere else you feel like.

hey makenai, did you ever realease a new version of Gpnese?

i'd like to try toplay with this system...

as far as i know it uses SHIFT-JIS or so.. CP

if so.. it'll make making of japanese applications easy

^_-

Japanese love DATE SIMS so they'd love Japanese fonts in the games.

Hi Don, this one uses EUC-JP encoding. I know Shift-JIS is more common by far, but EUC is much easier to work with. Most of the algorithms for dealing with the fonts and encoding came from a book called 'CJKV Information Processing' that you might be interested in.

Kind of embarassing for a real programmer to look at my messy sources ^^;;

zboy9: Nope - sorry, I never did release a new one. I wanted to make a version with a better input system and kanji lookup, but never got the time to get anywhere with it.

But... i think i have to read the book u pointed

Sorry about the comments - I hadn't planned to release it in this state originally :p Even in college, I would always write the assignment program to completion, then go back and make up comments to make the instructors happy. ^_^

As for the Japanese fonts, there is the one in standins directory of gpnese-src archive - it's just a 16x16 bitmap font. There are some others at the Monash Nihongo FTP directory:

http://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html

I think in fact that I just took the one called kijis16.zip from that place and converted it to a header file. I think that zip comes with a doc file that explains the format and certain gaps in between the rows better.

I think the JIS-1990 chart in the back of that CJKV book might be helpful in visualizing it.

And actually, I don't like those instructors 8) Anyways, thank you!

Yesterday I looked for that EUC-JP references (and that book) in the Internernet and found everything I need. + some CP convertors 8)

Thank you for the new link.

Hi Makenai

Cheers for the great Japanese dictionary.. I've been meaning to get in touch with you for a while cos all I thought it needed was the ability to use a Caps lock function when inputting english words to translate. Would be very handy.

But you definately won't be doing a new version now I take it?

Thanks again mate.
