GP2X Awesome Software For Typing On Gp2x

I'll say what I said in a different thread regarding this:
I hardly think Dasher was made with joysticks in mind. Especially joysticks with no speed control. I think Dasher would be HORRIBLE for the Gippex, but then again, we'll never know until someone ports it.

There's already a discussion going on about typing on the Gippex, and it's over here.

It'd fine fine as long as you made the speed increase and not just go from stopped to super fast as soon as you move the stick. But I'm not going to port it, because I can't get used to typing with all the letters in such strange places: I'd rather have them in alphabetical order than having it try to predict what you're typing and offer the next letters in convenient places, hence why I use an on-screen keyboard :).

My point isn't the speed of the zooming, but rather controlling the cursor around to make sure you get the right letters. Seems like you need the precision of a mouse or something similar to be able to use that thing in an "effective" manner.

Have you tried Dasher on a PC? All the letters are there (A at the top, Z at the bottom) but it uses text prediction to make the target area for the most likely letters larger and so easier to hit.

The letters are chosen are those that pass through a central cross on the screen, the cursor is just to control the speed and direction of the zoom.

The speed is controlled by the distance of the cursor from the central cross on the screen so the GP2X joystick may make control easier than a mouse because it's easier to move up and down without moving left or right.

When I get a moment, I might try a mock up of the interface to see if it's worth porting. Dasher requires quite a few libraries that would need porting.

I think Dasher would be sweet on the GP2x. I had a go at hacking together a rough implementation myself about a week back but ran into issues, mainly due to not really looking at the existing ports for a decent idea of -how- to implement the structure required by the core.

Dasher is broken into two parts, the core and the interface - the interface is where most of the library dependancies are, core only uses an XML parsing library which compiled for me using the open2x toolchain without a hitch. The individual source files in the core compile fine too, but you need an interface implementation in order to link together an executable.

It'd actually be really quite straight forward to port, I think. Something I'm going to have another stab at in the future if noone else does.
