I thought this was very interesting.
DX Gaming

Nice little study on what it cost to have a game system plugged up running and playing or idle while you sleep.

I normally have up to 4 or 5 plugged in at one time throughout the house. I might be tempted to unplug a few things now, unless I am using them.

edit: typo

thats pretty cool
they are a bit irrational though squabling about $2 for keeping a console on

The most ill leave a console on is if I'm in the middle of playing, and I have to run out really quite without being able to save. Other than that, I dont really sleep with anything running.

I think what they are talking about is that a lot of electronic devices can’t be fully turned off without pulling the wall plug. The PS2 can go into standby mode. The little red light is on during this mode. All the things that I have plugged up in the house, like my TV, DVD player, etc are pulling electricity from the wall even through they are turned off. Everything is waiting and searching for an electronic signal from a remote telling it to turn on. Many game systems may look off but they are still drawing electricity from the wall.
(turns on all game systems in house, neighborhood lights dem)

I turn off my PC, and hit the Power Supply Switch. Ever since a thunderstorm that killed my power supply, I take no chances.

I have a thing about leaving anything electric switched on when im not around or asleep, i will get up at night or having left home return again if i think i have only left a phone charger or something in stand by plugged in, if it is not used the power switch on the wall plug itself is switched off. The only thing on at night or when im not at home is the fridge :p

Except that still wouldn't save your save power supply, since the current would go through. However, pull the plug and that can't happen.

At $2.63 a year for 20 years, that would be $52.60! That would be enough to buy a game for something. Even a used game for something. Maybe for a DS sp delite.

edit: Maybe it will be the WiiDS sp delite by then.

I always make sure to turn it off at the wall cos i don't want a power surge blowing all my electronics i do have a surge protector plug socket but it has been play up abit so i don't want to risk it.
My pc gets unpluged and so do my consoles
my fiance is very picky about leave things swiched on.

It sounds petty if you're thinking about your power bill, but I read a while ago (probably in New Scientist?) that if everyone in the USA turned their TVs off properly instead of standby they could shut down a handful of power stations. There was also something about the switch from filament bulbs in traffic lights to LEDs in New York - expected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

These tiny savings are incredible when you scale them up to a whole population.

So do they still use power even when turned off by the console but still switched on at the mains (Eg like how a TV uses power when off in standby mode)

If so then I better re do my console / TV area :p... I have a DS, N64, PS2, PSX, SNES, MasterSystem, Amiga, DVD Player, TV, VCR, Freeview Box all plugged into One Socket and if all them are using power even when off but on at the mains then fook me that probably why the energy bill was high :p :p LOL

I know this is an old topic, but it looks like it just became current again!
When I first started this thread, I thought that the info was a bit odd and interesting. Now someone has gone and taken it too seriously. Not only do we video gamers kill people because of playing violent video games, now we are wasting energy too! Are we the black sheep of society? The scape goats. Why can't they pick on someone else for a while. I am sure there are other people wasting energy.

Video gamers waste Energy!

 (runs and hides in closet with game console)
