Hello to all, this is my first post so please be gentle!

I have just aquired a GP2X that a very good friend bought for me and need to know this:

What is the "best" SD card to buy? Or if that is an impossible question, what are the better ones?

I notice that SanDisk seem to be OK for firmware upgrades, although I have 2.0.0 firmware already so I shouldn't need to worry about that for now. I do like SanDisk though, and I notice that Amazon are selling the 1GB Ultra II for £25.59 at the moment.

Obviously, the Ultra II is a faster card than some others, but can the GP2X make use of faster cards, or does it actually prefer more "normal" speed ones?

Also, I know I might get a better deal through eBay, but I have a feeling there are a lot of fakes going around on there, and I would rather buy from a "reputable" company! ;)

Any thoughts very much appreciated.

Cheers
James

I use the Viking 1gb and 2gb cards, they're very reliable and havn't had a problem with them (recommended by a friend of mine who recently bought a GP2X as well). I'm avoiding buying the ones from gp2x.co.uk again though, as they were too expensive and it ended up breaking on the third day. :(

For the same price of an Intergral 2gb SD card from gp2x.co.uk, I bought:

1gb Viking SD Card
2gb Viking SD Card
Card Reader

:D

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I had read on another thread that had a list of tested cards that the Viking cards were not good for firmware upgrading. Anybody have any experience of this, good or bad?

Also, does the GP2X benefit from more expensive high speed cards, or is the bus limited to a certain speed? I read that videos should play with just about any card - they are all fast enough for the purpose - but that faster cards might improve some games performance.

I am not interested in the cheapest card I can lay my hands on, as I have heard so many times about problems with budget and no-name cards in other applications, but I would like to choose the best performing and most reliable if possible.

I really appreciate your thoughts on this one. Thanks again.

I use Newegg religiously for my SD purchases. Last card I purchased was a 2GB TwinMOS, which is what I currently use with my GP2X. Works great, even for firmware upgrading. Now I am dreaming of a 4GB...maybe next payday.

From what I've read, as of firmware 2.0, flashing your gp2x should be alot easier and work with most cards as they've changed the upgrading system. And you're right about not using ebay for SD cards... I bought a 128mb SanDisk for flashing from ebay and the card was a total duff. Luckily the guy I bought it from let me send it back and gave me a new one which works perfectly, although I have a funny feeling it's not an official SanDisk.
And as for videos, speed dosn't seem to make difference as I watch avis all the time and they work fine on my 1gb Integral. Two suggestions though buddy;

1) Buy yourself a compatible power-supply as this thing goes through batterys pretty quick
2) Get yourself some decent rechargeables (at least 1500mah)

Enjoy!

Thanks for the ideas people.

Demonblaze: Do you know whether the GP2X can actually get any speed benefit from the use of higher speed cards. I know it makes no difference with some digital cameras, although they will still work with them at the lower speeds. Of course, I guess if I use higher speed cards, I can transfer large files to them on the PC much faster? I just can't find an answer to this one.

And I am already using rechargables, so that's no problem, but I will definitely get a power supply and also a TV out cable very soon.

Thanks again.
