Updating To 2.0

So, i've tried updating to the 2.0 firmware from the 1.4 firmware on a super digital 1gb flash memorycard. I followed the instructionas and have not got any response, no hanging green screen, no updating screen, nothing.

In the past I've always had to use the alternative updater, so is there likely to be an alternative updater for 2.0 coming out soon?

I'm in the same boat as you. But I'm using 1.2.1. Is it possible that if I update to 1.4 that may card would become compatible for updating firmware with, or will it use the same cards?

Also if I was to buy a new 4GB card, what brand would guanrentee me to update? thanks.

Until Robster gets his bricked GP2X fixed, I doubt it.

But to be honest, I can't see why GPH don't adopt the 'alternative' method as standard. I presume it works with all GP2X units whereas their current method is a bit hit and miss.

I was hoping that would work, but it made no difference. :(

@ Miknal: Perhaps your Sd card isn't compatible. Have you formated it in Fat32, used a Usb card reader to put files on it ?

@icurafu : Updating to 1.4 could resolve some problem with some Sd cards. If not you could try the alternative updater for 1.4 (the one made for Sd card compatibility problem)

Yeah, I have.

And damn, didn't realise robster bricked. Ahh well, 1.4 for me I guess, unless I can be bothered to invest in another one...damn my student cheapness.

The problem isn't just an alternative updater, as 2.0 doesn't just update the kernel. It updates uboot, the kernel and the file system. The new uboot is required to setup the file system properly, as the new file system is much bigger than the one used in the older firmwares. So it's going to take a lot of work to do an alternative upgrader.

I've tried updating the uboot from within Linux as a quick alternative, but it just bricked my unit. Didn't take long to fix as I have JTAG, but even if you could update uboot, there's no guarantee the new uboot will be compatible with your cards either, and that is required to format the new file system and install the new kernel.

So my advice would be to purchase another SD that is compatible. They are quite cheap now.

Yeah, those cheap SD cards are great ... I have an 'Impact' 256MB card that I picked up at Walmart for ~$14. It works fine so I use it for all my FW updates/skin installs.

regarding the question mentioned before "why gph did not create a gui updating utility", that's what they wrote me back when i asked them:

"Regarding updating tool from the GUI, we already considered to use it.
But as the survey showed that users prefer to upgrade like we are doing, we decided not to use that tool."

man, i wish they had.

but in spite of all my wasted hours trying to update that thing and all the sd-cards i borrowed , they managed to pull a smile from me with their answer. at least they tried to care.

Thats all very well, but why should I buy another SD card ahen the one supplied with my GP2X by GP2X won't upgrade to firmware v2.00!!!!! Will they give me a refund?

Where did you buy your Gp2X ? Strange that a seller's selling not compatible cards.
Before buying a new one, you could try to update the firmware with a friend's Sd card to test it out.

I bought it from the official GP2X site in the UK back in December. They had a special offer to include a 1Gb SD card made by Sandisk. I notice that Sandisk's cards feature both in the 'approved' section of cards to use & the 'may work, but may not upgrade'. After many hours of trying to upgrade to firmware v2.00 - it was able to upgrade to firmware 1.4, using all our members suggestions. I gave up.

Users prefer risking bricking, lockups, etc?

I have to wonder if that's not a snowjob.

I cant either use the official way to upgrade, but i wounder if it makes any difference if I reformat the card and try again?

Have anyone had some luck by reformatting?

Update: Did a reformating, it was successful i now have a v2.0.0 Gp2x :)
