What Is Your Average Overclocking Speed?

The video decoder hardware will probably be more sensitive to overclocking problems than the ARM920T or the main RAM will be (The more crucial factors to stability). After all, that's the first thing to crap out (apparently) when battery voltage dips, too.

I can play at 275mHz for half an hour but then the system locks up.
At 250mHz it is rock hard stable. And pretty much everything I've played (Amiga aside) is full or close to full speed on 250.

It could probably do 266mHz, but I haven't tried yet. I will soon.
EDIT: No, it can't do 266 either. But the strange thing is it locked up after only 5 minutes at 266, yet it takes 30 minutes to lock up at 275? I don't get it.
EDIT2: Whoops, that was because the batteries ran out at that point. I've just been playing for over an hour at 266, no problems.
 
It's weird for me. My overclocking speed depends in the emulator I run. I can run up to 300mhz and play DrMDX for hours. As fast as DrMDX is I still need to OC high to play M.U.S.H.A at full speed. If I try to OC to above 280 with MAME it won't even load roms or lock within 30 seconds of play. For GnGeo I can clock at 290 with no problems what so ever. Everything is stable when I OC to 280. I can run at that speed for hours. For MAME the best clock rate is 275 and still be stable.

Hahaha, I didn't catch myself when I said that. I haven't used the overclocking utility - but I have run it at the 266mhz clockspeed in that emulator. :lol:

Its weird, when I had the overclocking program...some clocks would just lock up the GP2x. For instance I can run the GP2x at 280mhz, but if I adjust it to 270, it will lock up. It happens with other numbers too, but at the moment I'm using Open2x and the overclocking program doesn't work.
 
I have a few questions about the overclocking utility.

1. When you change the clockspeed, and re-enter the program, are the change suppose to be shown? IE: Set clock speed to 250, leave the program by pressing Select, and open the program again. Should it state 250mhz?


2. Are overclocks shown in applications such as DRMDX? IE: This changed clockspeed being shown in the menu (I cannot seem to change it in-menu, and the CPUclock utility does not affect this.


I believe that my CPU overclocking utility is functioning, based on the change of the LCDClockGenerator change (you could see the difference (TONS of scanlines). I seem to have a really stable playspeed at 300mhz, on MAINS (homemade power adapter). (I have a 2nd Generation GP2X (purchased on March 8th, 06).

You could confirm the speed increase by running 2XMark before and after you overclock, and see if your score rises.

If you're running 1.4 firmware, the clockspeed is set to 100MHz when you enter the menu, then 200MHz when you run an app from said menu.
 
Is the CPU hard soldered onto the board or would it be possible to replace it with a more powerful one in the future? (kind of like replacing cpu's in a pc) I doubt it but I got no clue about these things. My "stable" top-speed is 266, everything above and my 2x crashes. I believe someone said that the 2nd generation gp2x's lack of the heatsink that was used for the 1st edition, thus are limited in overclocking.

Worse; the main CPU (ARM920T) is integrated into one larger System on a Chip (SoC) called the MMSP2. You cannot replace any of the processor cores. Unless you have access to a cleanroom and equipment that can replace sub-microscopic components safely. ;) There is no heatsink on any GP2X unit, though I do believe all machines have a thermal transfer pad that attaches the MMSP2 to the metal EMI shielding. This provides some rudimentary cooling (the MMSP2 should not produce much heat.)

I've set some dreamcast thermal pad on my gp2x, and it's acting pretty weird.

I've no trouble going to 279Mhz, it's pretty stable (several hours of quake without any problem, artefact, ect...) but when trying to clock to 280Mhz it just crash.

Looks like I have no "transition" zone, one less Mhz and it is totally stable, one more and pressing select crash the system.

I would imagine it's like that on every GP2X, if you think about it.

Dang, I tried using the CPU/LCD tweaker in my version 2.0.0 firmware but I cannot adjust the clock in DRmdx. The option stays locked in the menu.

Do I have to write some script on the front directory or where should I edit and edit what.

This linux handheld thing is very new to me. Yes I do have a cable for my gp2x so I can just update the SD card too. Thank you in advance.
 
The overclock-option in drmdx does nothing, so you can not alter the clockspeed with the menupoint and it doesn't change if you alter the speed by running the CPU/LCD-Tweaker. I think this will change in further versions. If you overclock with the tweaker and you use a correct script, than it should work ... nevertheless the menu will state, that the gp2x runs at 200mhz.
 
It looks like I know my exact limits now. I can reach up to 320 MHz which is very unstable, 315 MHz which is quite unstable, 310 MHz which is stable in most things besides SquidgeSNES or Quake, or 300-305 MHz which is stable in about everything. I really need to see about ramping up my ARM920T voltage.
