It's still acting up.

184Mhz no probs some days, but mostly hangs up at anything over 132Mhz. Damn.

I've tried everything, it just won't listen. The voltage-modded freak.

Is overclocking only a tempoary ability of the GP32? Mine goes to 188Mhz stable after it got pencil tricked, although I mostly use it at 144 and only use the highest in Snes9xGP. I'll stop doing that and remove all graphite from the resistor if it's damaging on long-term use, so please tell me!

Overvolting can decrease the lifespan of the processor, but it's unlikely it'll die anytime in OUR lifetimes with normal use unless you raised the voltage a LOT, or the CPU is running very hot (not common for ARM9 processors.) CPUs don't progressively 'get damaged' and overclock 'less', they work or they don't, generally.

Overclocking, however, is hit-or-miss. It will work sometimes and not work others-- but your CPU won't somehow 'rot away'. ;)

I've been thinking about it, and who the hell cares? If it is to die, let it die, that's why GP2Xs are made, to replace dying GP32s. Fullspeed SMW and DK Country here I come, the 184Mhz way!

I'm very tempted to pick up a new BLU on Ebay. There's something about the GP32 that I like over GP2X's, PSP's and other handhelds with a emulator scene. It's just so 'pick up and play', a very fun feel about it, not over 'serious' like the PSP.

As far as portable Megadrive/NES/C64 emulation goes, I still don't think it can be beaten (bar compatibility with some games). The games look better on the GP32's screen than the PSP's, as it has the right aspect ratio. Plus the modded keyboard is a great accessory for 8-bit computer emulation.

Yes, you agree.

I agree, the GP32 is great, that's one of the few reasons I bought one ;)

if anybody wants to know the long term affect of the pencil trick, maybe send a PM to Trooper. When the trick was first discovered, he did an extensive test overclocking is GP32 and he kept it on continuesly for hours upon hours to see if it would kill the GP32 or have any effect, which it did not at the time.

Trooper pencil-tricked it ~10 months ago, that's not that long of a term ;)

I've been running MegaDrive/Genesis systems with 7.6 MHz 68000 processors at 25.4 MHz for months without incident. Sure, they crash sometimes. But no damage has occurred to any of them from it. :) I Wouldn't worry that much. If the machine dies, get a Gp2x, as was said. *shrug*

That`s as maybe, But she`s still going strong @ 204mhz with no hiccups what so ever, And she`s getting more play now (since i`ve misplaced my GP2x) than she has ever been, Shining force 2 (via DrMD) is taking up too much of my spare time .

My GP32's resistor modded and worked fine for months. I could play at 184Mhz for as long as I wanted without it locking up (although generally 166Mhz was the maximum I felt was needed).

It still runs at 184Mhz but then will freeze after a few minutes (or seconds depending on how it's feeling). It's not the usual immediate hang up that you get when you *over* over-clock, it does that at 185Mhz..

Any ideas? As I say, 132Mhz is the max stable setting now. I bought some decent batteries in hope that an extra boost would help (Nope.), although it was always happy with any old cheapy ones in the past.

I opened it up and prodded the resistor with a pencil but that's the most I could manage technically! I don't know what I expected to achieve! "That'll do the trick," I thought.
