Pc Link Not Working?

I've just bought a used GP32 NLU. It came with a 128 mb SMC, full with games, a few video clips and other random goodies. I have WinXP, installed the drivers, GPManager and GP32 PCLink. When I try to connect the GP with the PC, I can't get it to work.

When I turn the console on, it shows a blue-ish Wind-Ups 2.0 menu. To the right there are 3 options - "Classic Desktop", "PC-Link 1.0", "About WindUps". To the left are all the installed programs, like Snes9xGP, GPCinema, GPEngine and so on. Everything seems to be working without any problems, but when I click on the PC-Link 1.0 option, the screen turns white, stays that way for 2-3 seconds and then returns to the Wind-Ups menu. Am I doing something wrong?

Just a couple of questions.

1) What happens when you hold the select button as you switch your GP32 on ?.

2) Do you own a card reader that is capable of reading smc`s ?.

Thanks for the reply :).

After I posted the thread, I kept trying, and eventually the pc link did work as supposed (I'm not sure if I pressed two specific buttons atthe same time or if it was just luck), I successfully transferred a few megabytes from my PC to the SMC, but then got a timeout. I tried to reconnect, but couldn't get the PC link to work again.

When I hold down Select when starting the GP32, I see a few circular buttons, arranged to represent the 8-way stick. The diagonal buttons are empty, the top one says "MP3", the bottom one says SNES, the left says Atari, the right - Genesis. There is also a button in the middle, which says WINDUPS. None of them work, except for the Windups one, which, when presses starts Windups and brings me to the blue menu I mentioned in the first post.

And no, I don't have a SMC reader.

You seem to have Aquafish`s firmware installed on your GP32, So you will not have any problems copying stuff/files over with a card reader, You should seriously consider getting a card reader, It saves on batteries, Transfers faster and you can use drag & drop for complete control without the headache of drivers or pc-link timeouts.

Yeah, I guess I'll get a card reader in the next few days, thanks for the help. :)

While fiddling with one of the games, the console displayed some interesting image, which I have never seen before or after that occasion - it said something about Aquafish on it, and had some kind of a logo and a few buttons to choose from (Game, PC Link and something else IIRC) - I guess it is some kind of a different boot menu. Anyway, that small snippet of text that said Aquafish reminded me of a firmware of the same name, so I downloaded it from the site and looked at the readme. When you keep the right shoulder button and the 8-way stick (regardless which direction) pressed while turning on the console, you get a boot menu, from which you can choose PC Link, among other options. I tried it, and surprise! - it worked :D.

Another random question - while playing any game, or listening to an mp3, or viewing a video clip or just playing sitting in the Winups menu, is it safe to just turn off the GP32? If not, how can I reset it or exit any application without problems?

In most situations it is pretty much safe to just switch of your GP32 when you are finished using it. Certain times when NOT to switch off your GP32 straight away is, When writing to the SMC, Such as performing a game save, Deleting a file or transfering files over to the GP32 via the usb cable from your pc without performing the safe disconnect procedure via your pc.

Doing the above is liable to corrupt or destroy your SMC, But won`t cause any harm to your GP32, Unless you power off during a firmware flashing (Think Brick or expensive door stop  ).
