Check out the specs that just went up on the official Playstation website (The tab on the right is a slider you have to drag).

I/O:

USB Front x 4, Rear x 2 (USB 2.0)
Memory Stick Standard/Duo, PRO x 1
SD Standard/Mini x 1
CompactFlash (Type I/II) x 1

Assuming this isn't more vapour, this should bring down SD prices a fair amount if lots of people want them for their PS3s, which is of course very nice for us.

i seriously cant imageine the ps3 useing sd,
it will almost 100% use sonys own format, memory stick,
thats also what they allways sayd before.

Sony is starting to realise that pushing their own formats isn't the best way to do business. They've just added mp3 support to a bunch of their music players after finally realising that they weren't quite big enough to dictate which format people should use.

You'd think that they might have learnt that lesson after betamax...

Sony confirmed that they are moving away from Memory Sticks in their mobile phones and will use SD cards insted. I can see this happeing also with the PS3 as no non Sony devices use Memory Sticks and they are currently the most expensive on the market at the moment.

Bye bye memory sticks????

i know that some of the minidisc players advertised as having mp3 support were actually just regular minidisc players that came with software to convert mp3 to aac. hopefully this is no longer the case.

thankfully it's not. I have a MZ-RH10 and it's really nice with the new HI-MD disks with 1 gb and when you can just transfer the mp3s without having to convert them. What sucks though is that you have to use the shitty sony software to do it.

what would really drive SD is if point-and-shoot digital got a megapixel boost.
This would help hard disks and photo software as well.
sure 6mp is already excessive for toy cameras, but they're starting to sell them with 8 now.

can you actually imagine a sony strategy meeting though?
I can: "well we'll give our new console our proprietary blue-ray disks codenamed 'betamax 2', but let's not completely hose them on secondary storage--nah, just kidding guys!"

As I see it, the more demand there is, the higher the price.

this is very true in the short run, while production, competition and technology are static.

A higher mp digital camera, for example, requires not just more cards, but generally larger capacity cards. If nothing is done, the cost of premium flashcards will skyrocket. But if price rises, somebody may see this as way to get into the market or a bargain brand may see enough profit to retool to a clone of the current premium card. The companies that were in there before will have to research a better card or other way to differentiate themselves from the new bargain brand, and the whole process starts over again.

Actually, most Beta tapes I've seen (I still have a player, but the power supply fried 3 years ago) had better quality than VHS tapes of the same age (well, acutally the VHS tapes I'm referring to were slightly newer).

Beta tapes were smaller, more compact, and better quality. To me, it defies logic that VHS won out, as VHS (correct me if I'm wrong) did not recieve the benefit of the 6-hour record time until after Beta started losing popularity (Beta only had 3 hours).

But yeah...

I'm surprised sony arn't sticking with the memory stick. I wish they'd decided to use SD cards when they made the psp.
