i do want to buy one, but i also need it to work out of the box without all the obvious problems it suffers from, so is it anywhere near GP32 standard yet?

Mine works fine with the CPU tweaker to fix the LCD (I literally just open the program and press B then quit, and the console works fine). And this is supposedly fixed with the next firmware.

If you want it to be perfect, you'll never be happy with the joystick. If I were in your position I would wait and see what the next firmware does.

My lcd is still wavey/flickery.....ive give up on them fixing it and i think we have to live with the fact that its just a cheap and nasty screen.

DRMD is good though :D

the display really isn't all that bad on FW 1.2.1 when compared to other similar screens.
but I think the source will have to be released to the community for a good month before we get a bug-free firmware.

as for the hardware issues, rumors of a cap redesign abound, but honestly for $10 DaveC's cap is good

Just how bad is this D-Pad compared to something else "Good" you've used? Stick aside. I mean if the Stick is replaced with something else, like DaveC's replacement cap, just how bad is it? I'm developing a top-scrolling shooter engine for the system, but I'd like to know I won't crash into every bullet because the pad is weird or unresponsive.

It's never going to respond like a neo geo stick, but with an improved cap it feels about as responsive as all the other systems out there, and if you've ever used the neogeo CD control 'pad' you'll know what the thumb sort of moves like with DaveC's cap.

I wish it clicked, but would drive most people nuts...
a lot of emus lag a bit in the joystick area--psx especially tends to bog down and stop caring about user input. This is more a programming issue.

I got my Gp2x on Friday (10/2), today one day later I have it running megadrive, pcengine, snes, neogeo. All very easy.

I have 1.2.0 of the OS.

It looks good, quality to me seems fine, much better than i was expecting, based on the sites/forums. Im quite chuffed with it really.

Sure the stick is a little weak and there are a few things I dont like the OS doing (but thats just me), for example the games icon should be linked to a games folder and only show the content of that folder (IMHO).

One thing I think would make a massive different is if the emaulator creators could agree on a 'standard' for button usage for the emulator controlling menus and GUIs, ever one if different and you need a lot of skill to rememebr what does what.

IE
back to menu is ...
in game options is ..
quit is ..
quit curent game is..

But lets face it they do a good job and I could/and can not thank them enough.

On the whole its a great system.

Whats the one thing I would change???
Make it have recharable batteries like a DS.

Go for you will love it !!

Any sign of an bug free anything yet?

For 200 bucks the GP2X is GREAT and I been enjoying the hell out of it. My poor PSP has been sitting in the corner collecting dust for the last month...

Get one, you won't regret it!

I honestly don't think the stick is that bad myself. I mean, it's not great and I'd rather have a d-pad, but it's not the deal breaker that it's made out to be. Maybe I'm just more precise than other people. Regardless, if you do some biasing in the control scheme towards the 4 main directions there won't be as much of a problem (for example if the user hits up and up-right at the same time, count it as "up"). There's an article in the wiki about it. (See Case 2)

if you are willing to put in the effort that it takes to get a lot of the software up and running (admittedly not that much, but definitely some), then you will be very happy i think. if you expect it to work wonders out of the box without any hacking around then you might be disappointed.

I agree with Ravnos, I really don't have any major problems with the stick.
I'd been holding out on buying one since late september, because I was worried about the build quality. I eventually got one last monday and I'm extremely pleased with it.
The only complaint I do have with the GP2X is the scanlines, and that is only a minor annoyance.

I think the usual thing has happened; people who are having problems are going to be louder and more likely to talk about them, then people with no problems simply wanting to compliment the console.

yeah, I'm also waiting (not for much longer though).....damn that joystick....
If GPH eventually don't fix it, I just might rip the original of the pcb (when I get my unit) and solder a better one :) .

I got a new joystick off davec. I've had no problems with it its better than the original joystick. I do wish they'd gone with a d pad instead. I'm using the firmware 1.4.0 beta at the moment and it has a lcd tweaker on it. It stops the scan lines but it still flickers a little and the image seems a little blury. Its only basic at the moment so hopefully they'll improve it. I'm beginning to feel like whitley does and think the lcd screen is cheap and nasty and will never work at 100%.
