I just got a new computer and i thought i would get a cheap game to play since its the first time ive had a computer fast enough to play a newer game in years. So i got Halo. It plays ok, but there is some serious slow down in the frame rate if there is lots of stuff going on. My computer has 1 gig of memory and is a p4 3.0ghz. So it should be plenty fast. So is the problem my video card? I just have the one that came in my computer but i thought it should be able to handle halo. If it is my video card that needs to be replaced, is there a site around that i can use to research what video card i need? I am not too much of a gamer but it would be pretty cool to be able to play games like Halo and GTA san andreas on my comp.

Maybe if you point out what videocard you have, we could decide whether the card is the Problem or not.
Indeed fast videocards are crucial for PC gaming

If it's onboard video, it's most probably a piece of shit. Go out and buy a decent AGP or PCI-X card.

I recommend you buying a PCI-Extreme card (in case your motherboard has got an PCIX slot, otherwise AGP) ->

To play recent games buy at least an:

Nvidia: 6600GT 128MB or better
..or...
ATI: X700 128MB or better

Attention: The first characters show the generation [although the generations I showed are on the same development stage] (6 for nvidia, X for ATI) ... the other numbers indicate the performance [again, the nv 6 and ati 7 are equivalent] ....

To consider:

Nvidia 7300 is much likely slower than a Nvidia 6600GT but supports the newest graphics technologys althought it likely can't display them at decent speed ;D.

same with ATI:

X700 is faster than a X1300 !

Hope this helped ;) !

no interest in linux for this computer. But that one that i posted is about my price range right now. Seems like alot of card for 80 bucks eh? 150 pounds is alot more than i want to spend for jusst some casual gaming. You think so?

As I said, I don't know a review about your card buy you should be OK with it... btw don't forget I talk about Euros, so in pounds it would be about 100 I think ;D.

How about this one? Is it any good? Its a great price if its worth a damn. I was looking for PCI express ones and this is what came up. What do you all think?

Edit--> I really know NOTHING about this stuff so if you say i should look at a certain card please let me know who makes and why its the one i should get. davey g told me a couple of cards but i really would like to learn a little about them so i can make a more educated decision. For example everyone says i should go with a pci express card but i have no idea why. And that doesnt seem to be the only important thing to look for. I'm not complaining by any stretch, i appreciate all help, but just give me a little more info if you can. Thanks!

Edit 2----> I forgot to put the link in. Yep im an idiot. THis is the one i was talking about http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PA...PROD_ID=1672475

Ok, so racoon i am so sorry. I didnt read your first post here very carefully. If i had i would have realized that you were explaining how to read the model names of the cards. I thought...well it doesnt matter what i thought. i think I am understand it now. So i found this card on Newegg. Its a SAPPHIRE 100595L-BL Radeon X700PRO 128MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - OEM. Its pretty cheap. But for just a few bucks more i can get SAPPHIRE X700 PRO Radeon X700PRO 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card - OEM. What do you think?

also make sure when you get your card to install the latest driver and disable vsync, not sure how to do that on an ATi. probably right click desktop -> properties -> whatever the last tab is called, believe display -> then there will be something near resolution that says something about advance settings -> then in their find one that says ATi. (not sure how true that is because I'm on Linux.

Those cards should be fine for what you want to play.

I've only got a sad old Nvidia FX5200 and that plays halo fine at 800x600 and even doom3 at low settings. Likewise halflife2 is ok at low settings too. World of Warcraft I can play at 1024 x 768 with medium settings.

PS I have had several ASUS cards and have always found them to be reliable.

first you should find out what motherboard you have, couse you realy have to know if it is agp or pci-e, or maybe neither.
