Runs on anything =p

Basically, someone should port this... A pretty good amount of things that can be played with it. Not sure how easily it could be done, but everything IS open source about it.

Only problem is that it has no Quicktime/Windows Media/Realtime support, because they won't code without source code, and Linux support won't be implemented for those Codecs.

mplayer is much better, we should just try to port it over as a homebrew version unlike GPH's hacked port.

The thing that makes VLC good is you can stream to it from any internet connection. It stands for Video Lan Connection, and it is a damn good media player.

That's a good feature, and thanks for mentioning it, but it's just not a very useful selling point as the GP2X has [nearly] no network connectivity.

My money's still on mplayer (which I just wub )

Yes please mplayer, and with Zoom- functionality a'la "Mediaplayer Classic" would be great - many of the widescreen videos can be zoomed a little bit closer without losing anything interesting. I'm really not a big fan of re-encoding videos.

Sorry to burst ALL of your bubbles about mplayer, but mplayer is WINDOWS ONLY. It uses code SPECIFICALLY for WINDOWS. No Linux, and no "bootstrap" crap or whatever.

This is why I suggested VLC. Otherwise I would have suggested mplayer myself.
Really?

U trippin?
Mplayer is mainly Linux software, although it has been ported to work on Windows systems & pretty much any other operating system that u care to mention.
It also comes with it's own versions of of all the major codecs which means that it has fantanstic compatability without any messing around.
I've tried VLC. Good for streaming but not as a no nonsense movie player.

***EDIT***
U might have tried one of the versions that someone else has put together with an unofficial frontend.
Here's the official home page.

There must be some misunderstanding. mplayer is a Linux media player wich evolved to a cross-platform media player. It's not windows specific (I run it everyday on my linux boxes). Shikaku must be talking about something else. Hoewever, mplayer is partly x86 only. For some codec (for instance recent Windows Media Video) it uses x86 Windows dll. Obviously, theses codecs can't be used on a GP2X.

edit: I was too slow.

Maybe not ALL the codecs (way too many out there), but the most popular & used ones certainly.
It can also use Windows dll's too.
MediaPlayer Classic is pretty damn good. I use that too on my Windows machine.
I normaly find that Mplayer plays what ever I need though & just have it installed as a backup :)

Port something eh?
Both mplayer and VLC are built opon the FFMpeg project anyway.

And what we need is generic mplayer with patches from the GPH "gplayer", not the stupid hacked up version they made.
They had mplayer , and they broke and crippled it

I hate to say it, but I think a standalone made by someone else would be better. I think that if GPH were to do it themselves, it would just cause more problems....

Or maybe I read something wrong... I dunno, but if I did, I am just saying don't let GPH do this basically...

Yea, how about asking that AFTER someone has an mplayer port running with codec support and all other essential features. Then we might start thinking about stuff such as zooming.

EDIT: I found a Zaurus mplayer port. I don't know if this'll help at all: http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=353

I'll post or edit in anything new I find about ARM-related mplayer ports.

Of course they shoudn't do it, they are the ones the fucked it up in the first place.
We just need the patches they made to the code in order to make it run as good as it does on the GP2x and patch it in to a current version of mplayer.

There's no need to look for anything new, we already have a snapshot of "gplayer" or whatever GPH calls it, we just need the newest version so we can integrate their changes to normal mplayer which doesn't have crippled features. Like no support for mpeg1, no ogm & matroska containers etc etc. That way we can make a good player.

I'm not one for sitting around and waiting. We should start on that, because then we have something DEFINITE happening.
