Can any one give me any tips on video encoding i'v tryed loads of avi's and only one has worked so far also if you can suggeset any good encoders that would be a great help thanx :p

you want to use pocketdivx... it converts the videos to the correct format.

The gp2x can't support the more advanced Mpeg4 features...

I suggest virtual dub. Pocketdivx is simple, but the everytime I tried it, it gave choppy video. Well, not really choppy, but as if it was not converting the frame rate properly.

I find Auto Gordian Knot gives me the best results,

All the videos and DVD's I encoded have worked well on the GP2X, never could master converting DVD to the GP32.

I use http://www.winmpg.com/ the programme will convert all to AVI, using WimMPG. I have been able to convert my PSP Mpeg file to AVI. The quality is very good. There is a cost for the programme. I think it was £20.00. For me it does not seem to big a price to pay for getting an easy video use of my GP2X. I have also been able to convert DVD direct but the DVD needs to be decorded first.

I encode everything in DivX 5.2.1 or whatever the sub numbers on 5 are and MP3 audio. It works great.

Virtualdubmod is probably the best, Canopus Procoder comes in at a close second :D. If you're having problems with audio lag, I suggest you use a constant bitrate mp3 file at 44khz, anything less gives lag Also if you continue to get lag such as I did, you can simply add an audio skew correction in virtualdubmod, -200 did the trick for me. :D

I know it's extra info but you may find it useful later on :D

i encode everythng in virtadub using vid 320x240 (unless its widescreen then its 320x176) at 600 kbps

and mp3 128kbps 44100 for audio

Add my vote for AutoGK ...

I've also played with ImTOO DVD Ripper 4 with some very good success. Its more user friendly than say, AutoGK. But of course .. you might have to ... gasp ... PAY for it :)

Super C works the best for me ... I even had a couple of movies that were labled as "Xvid" but only played the audio on the GP2X. So, after re-converting to Xvid, voila! It worked.

I'm very much in the dark with all this encoding stuff, but find using Super C very easy ... more so than encoding .MP4s for the PSP.

I think 'pocketdivx' is easier to use than virtualdub, and if you take the time to set up your conversion properly, it does a more than adequate job. I've just done 'liar, liar', and 'dumb and dumber'(ok, jim carrey fan), and both come in at approx 230 meg. I used 318kbps video at 15fps, and 96kbps stereo sound at 44mh, tweaked the color and contrast, and used the sound resync option. All takes about 1 hour. Perfect reproduction and good to watch. Must try out 'Blade Runner' for optimum pic quality !

Check out the Wiki for more detailed instructions on how to use Auto GK. Every video I have converted with it plays perfectly, and you can edit the width of the video before you 'convert' it, so you can have a tiny Xvid just the size of the GP2X screen.
