Shell Replacement

Well, here's my idea.

I know the GP2X is in early stages, and I expect things to change. I like eye candy, and I assume anyone else who downloads skins also does. I would like to see a shell replacement that does some things that ObjectDesktop does on windows. Specifically:

1. Animated icons - These ruled and served no purpose but to look good.
2. Mouseover and Onclick events - kinda goes hand in hand with #1, but would allow audio events and secondary/tertiary animations to be triggered.
3. Power up sounds.

As I already said, I know everyone is still working on the function of the GP2X. I'd just like to see something like this to let me be creative. I don't know the first thing about programming so this type of shell may not even be possible, which is why I am calling this an idea.

Input?

Edit: Also, I'm offering a bounty for this project. I'll offer $50 to a dev who can make this happen with PNG transparency support, and can make animations run at 30FPS.

I, also, would really like to see a replacement interface to the standard gp2xmenu. And darn it, something that shows a clock and date the whole time too. Good idea.

Not possible as there is no clock battery.

Edit: This will have to be put on the back burner for a long while guys there are many other problems other than just having a nice GUI to fix first. And anyway who wants the resource hog - if they do make anything, they should go for light use of resources, ergonomics, and a simple moddable GUI.

I know there's stuff to accomplish first, but as I said, this is an idea. The capability of the shell to use those features doesn't necessarily mean it will be a resource hog. It could be built as a modular system that you can enable/disable features on.

Could.

If your priority is the GP2X booting in under 5 seconds then I'm very happy for you. My priority is not yours, and obviously not everyone agrees.

Get your priorities straight.

Although I'm very much on Hanz's side, I like your snappy comeback. :)

Don't get me wrong, I understand his point of view. My priority is the front end of things, while the real devs do all the work that makes the GP2X useful.

It's funny how there are so many people in forums that think that if it's their opinion, then it's the only opinion. To say that "the gp2x must boot in 5 seconds instead of loading a graphical environment.. get your priorites right" is not only rude but solely based on opinion. That's why you have some people who run Windows servers, Windows desktops, and Windows pda's .. and then there are the UNIX/Linux guys who like Linux as a server, desktop, and portable device. Everyone's opinion is different, if you want to voice an opinion on why you think it wouldn't work, then that is one thing.. but to blatanly speak for the entire community in saying that getting the gp2x to boot in 5 seconds is the right choice is just biased and silly.

On another note, I would like to see both in action and then see which fits me the most. The current load time doesn't really bother me, and I really have no current reason to boot straight into a terminal with the GP2x at a 5 second boot time. So a difference in the shell I think, could only be a good thing no matter what it does. The more the merrier I say!
