Overclock New GP32s??

Hi,


I'm a bit confused by 'ste_167's posting, are the current (new, availible now,) Gp32's as fully overclockable as the earlier models?
 
Well, the problem is, some GPs can be overclocked while some freeze as soon as you try.
What we do NOT know is, if newer GP32s can be overclocked or not.
So, if you buy a new GP32, it may be overclockable and it may be not.

The guy you were talking about wants a GP32 which can be overclocked for sure - so he's willing to exchange an old "working" GP with a new one - where no one can know, if it will be overclockable or not.
 
Mine can go higher that 133, but I wont risk it.

ALL GP32s ARE ABLE TO GO TO 133. They are tested to that spec.
 
OOhhh.... i didn't know that overclocking was PURELY a hardware issue. I mean I know that it is the hardware that is doing the overclocking, but I thought that the software told the CPU to overclock, and it is not the CPU that has limitations.
 
hmm mine goes (in castaway) up to 150 Mhz but after that (156 and above) it freezes just after one second .. craig testet his gp32 at 166 for several Hours without any problems...
it would be sad if no more and more software comes out which only runs well when you overcklock your gp32
 
yeah, people may start taking advantage of its overclocking capabilities, while it may fry some people's GP and it won' work at all on others. :(

Actually.. I would say 132MHz is the last safe MHz.. because the same spec that says 133MHz is ok for the CPU says in other part of the spec that the max for busses etc stuff is 66MHz (theirs clock speed gets derived from the CPU clock speed). So 133MHz actually causes overclocking on the other part of the system, which I know makes some GP32s I have met unreliable :angry:

Well, mine works fine at 166MHz, too.

But I don't think coders will rely on 166 MHz. They may add an overclocking option for getting some more speed out of their emulators, but they won't use this as a must-have.
 
Yeah - all GP32s run at 40Mhz as sytandard, so anything over that is oerclocking. Any GP32 that won;t run correctly at 133Mhz is probably faulty, as they are specifically meant to run stabily at that speed. Some can also run stable at 166Mhz (mine is a bit fussy, and only works if the batteries are at full power, but runs fine at 150 all the time).

So... unless they're faulty, any GP32 should overclock to 133 with no probs.
 
132/133, basically the same, I just say 133 because it requires less movement of my hand on the keyboard. I beleive that gamepark test the processors at 133, though, not that it really means anything.

66mhz is the official spec, this was changed from an original 40mhz, and most commercial games/software should run at that. That rule has been broken recently by JoyGP and GPCinema, I'm not sure how or why, but I don't beleive they should have included any speed above 133, too risky, despite the warnings that come with it.

Besides, when you go above 133, the battery life gets shorter and shorter. All emulators in my opinion, must have a 133mhz or less option. I don't think its a good idea for authors to get lazy, and hard code their emus at a higher spec.

Just remember that you are taking a serious risk if you clock it over 133, a very serious risk. It may seem to run fine, but the silicon in the chip will degrade a lot faster than normal. That happens in all CPUs, I managed to drastically lessen my old Duron 700s life by overclocking it more than I should have. I just ask for everyone to be careful and realise that if it fucks up, thats a good few hundred dollars down the drain for a few extra FPS.

Well, they run faster.
Which is only needed, if the games have problems running at full speed at a normal MHz rate.
So it can be mostly used for emulators where the GP32 needs the extra power (e.g. SNES).
