GP2X Interesting Idea To Play With..

Since the GP2X makes use of the Linux operating system, would it be possible to cross-compile and make use of any current linux application (i.e. emacs, xterm, etc.)? Does the handheld use the X window system?

With this said, I was thinking of purchasing a GP2X and fitting a touchscreen onto the front (a resistive model for use with a stylus) in order to use it as both a homebrew handheld and a sort of PDA. With the right calender and note tools, as well as the touchscreen and handwriting recognition software, this device could make a great all around media player/PDA. Would this sort of thing be possible?

No, it doesnt use X windows.

And, what you are proposing... you could probably just buy a nicely equipped PDA, that will have just as much homebrew (a lot more actually) (and some PDA's have almost usable controllers for games).

but it would certainly be interesting to see how it turned out.. though, you would probably have to port all the software you are interested in yourself, as there wont be many (any?) other people needing handwriting recognition software for it.

and if all you want is calander, note tools, and stuff like that, you could probably get a half decent older pocketPC for the price of the screen you'd want.

And to answer your question about cross compilation it is possible. There is a version of gunboy that was copied over from a debian archive that worked right out of the "box". So as long as it compiles it should run. :)

Granted you need to make sure that the inputs and outputs are configured correctly in some instances.

Running emacs on there would be pretty damned sick, but should be fully doable. Hell, as above.. why not just try copying the emacs core (and not bother with all the elisp files until later) and see if it works? But building it shouldn't be all that hard. Just wrong :)

For sure, its not all that expensive to get an older PDA, even one running Unix/Linux (ie: A zaurus, or an old iPaq flashed to Linux).

But a cool mod to be tried, if you can find a compatible touchscreen for the display already present :)

Well what it sounds like you need is a tapwave zodiac.
Learn more at
www.zodiacresource.com
www.zodiacgamer.com
www.tapland.com
The zodiac can play
movies
music
games
emulate all sorts of systems
It features an analog stick two trigger buttons and a 480x320 pixel touch screen.
It runs on palm os 5.2.7 so it will have all your standard pda datebook memo etc. plus all of the homebrew goodness!

I am not trying to star a flame war but I am just saying that for this guy the zodiac seems to suit him more.

With the right calender and note tools...
No problem with the note tools (vi is already installed, and it wouldn't take much to get something better on there), but there's no point having a calender as the clock isn't battery backed up.
