Hi, I'm a noob so don't hurt me badly. I was wondering if noobs like me should get a GP2X if we aren't extremely good with this stuff. I mean after the official release btw, so once every thing is put together will this still be complicated?

You will be fine even before the official release.

You can enjoy this struggling. Don't be afraid just beacuse of reading some moanings.
(It could be more fun than 'just buy, put it in, play' handhelds)

It is quite a straight system, I believe.

Read the doc's
read the boards
put the files on your card
play anything that looks like a soccerball

No seriously I was wondering how hard it would be myself. If I had to give you one piece advice start with the home brew.

Just put the files on the card and play!!
It is that easy
after you feel comfortable with that throw on the snes emulator and put a rom in the roms folder.
Select the snes emulator and select the game.
after this you will feel more confident to try other things possibly quake.

Yes my answer is yes newbies can have fun too with little or no experience. Just don't let the whole thing be overwhelming and take it one step at a time.

Try one game at a time and enjoy

*one more thing holding down the stick and the R button for a couple of seconds exits to the game select screen in the snes emu I believe. This was very annoying to me too try to figure out.*

I was a total noob when I got my gp32 and had to learn from scratch. It's part of the fun of it really and when you get something to work the "OMG" factor is all that much better.

Plus there are plenty of people here to help. It's quite a vibrant community and if you ignore the grumpy flamers you'll be fine. Join in, the more the merrier.

;)

I had the same problem, only just figured it out today. When I read the readme I thought it said to press all the buttons at the same time. This was really hard and I lost several fingers doing this, and it always just made my GeePee crash :p

It took me a while to get files onto my SD card. Other than that, I think a monkey could handle it.

There's nothing to it when it comes to basic useage, and there's already a whole bunch of guides for the more complex stuff.

If you want to play music or a movie, copy it to the SD card and open it in the appropriate player. If you want to rip a movie from a DVD, then take a look at the Video & Music forum and you'll be able to do that too.

How easy is that? :)

It's moderate, it's nothing like a PSP or DS that you can pick up and use from the beginning(however it will be hopefully when it launches officially). It has some bugs in the firmware that can be fixed through updates, but those updates can waste your system if you aren't carefull...

Just because it worked for you does not mean it will work as easy for everyone else. Several devices are already dead-flashed. Chances seem to be low, but it could haben to everyone.

I have some more confidence now :)
So is it the same difficulty as maybe a PocketPC?

The chances ARE VERY LOW IF you are careful about it.

I think that it is moderately difficult. I'm coming from the gp32, so I'm used to things being difficult (remember freelauncher? I used that up until about march of this year because I was worried about bricking mine with a firmware flash). So, to me the gp2x is easy to use, but if you're not used to messing around a little bit to get things to work, then you may find it difficult. Just keep trying, ask on the boards if you really need help, I'm sure you'll figure it out. Just make sure you understand some basic things, reead the readme's, and read on the boards and you should be fine.
