OK assuming the MMSP2 does indeed have a real USB host controller on board, and that it only needs some minimal electronics to support a USB 1.1 Host connection.

How many pins of the EXT port are NOT used?
(its a 24-pin connector, cellphone style)

I would guess lots.
  • JTAG (4)
  • Serial (3,ish)
  • TV-out (6, S-Video/Stereo sound)
Leaving 11 or so pins unused.

Even if there is a VGA output (RGB H, V Synch about 5 pins plus ground)

That would leave about 5 pins still.

A clever usb host implimentation would need just 2, (5V can't come from the GP2X anyways an external battery is still needed...)

If GPH were to change their PCB layout, would connecting the USB host to the EXT port be possible? Any Engineers here know about this kind of stuff?

It's certainly possible to connect the USB to the EXT port, but I don't see why GPH would do such a thing when they have no interest in USB host, and have USB slave already via the 2272.

Then again, there's 24 pins, so anything is possible :)

I say it would be sweet, it's like the only thing missing. It would mean access to any powered USB device like MP3 players and perhaps the easiest way to link multiple units together?

There could even be a TV out cable with a female USB so you can have multiplayer on a TV.

well you could hook that UART to a bluetooth module...

or go real low-tech and have a daisy-chained serial network.

(worked for doom :D )

At Toyz4Boyz where they are selling the serial leads they have a Bluetooth adapter listed in the prices, So i guess somebody is already working on that :)
