The batteries could be duds too (I've had this problem with cheap rechargables). Try taking them back and replacing them for other ones.
I dont think £30 is cheap for some batteries, Uniros have always done a great job in the past but the GP2X just drains the life out of them within minuites litterally.

I don't mean inexpensive, I mean cheap quality. I bought some "Power Port" 2000mAh batteries that came with a charger and they were quite expensive. The charger is great, but the batteries run for less than an hour in my little camera.

Some batteries are bad out of the packet, that's why they all have warranties. So just take them back to the store for a refund/replacement. Can't hurt, can it?

my uniross exploded. My newer uniross charger makes a burning smell and so do batteries whiel charging and get super hot. Is that normal? (its a 2 hour charger) bout a year old.

Get some Ansmann rechargeables here.

They did pretty well in my OMGULTRAHIGHBATTERYDRAIN digicam. Now I just need a GP2X to test them...

I dont want to buy more batterys, the ones I brought should be fine but 30 minuites from a full charged pair and the same time from a pair fresh from packet should last ALOT longer than 30 minuites.

First you need to try other batteries in your gp2x.
Second try your batteries in a few differenet electronics.

Find out the results.

Can anyone suggest a brand/shop in the UK for the best battery type so far?

Cheers.

Just found so Ansmann 4x 2600mAh £14.95 : -

Or these on ebay : -

That well know brand Beter Power!!!! Not but interestingly it does say that these batterys are used for famous brands and that for every one you return they will send you two replacments. hows that for a vote of confidence!!!

I only get about 10-15 minutes out of a fully charged set of 2300 mAh batteries. That's while playing Great Giana Sisters in Frodo. After 10-15 minutes, the screen corrupts and the whole thing hangs. Batteries drained.

These batteries work fine in other equipment (digital camera, iRiver etc.), so it's just the GP2X.

Seriously, this is crazy. Why are there such huge discrepencies in the battery consumption? I'm tempted to send mine back to Craig. This can't be right.

Hahahaha! That's simply awful. My 2000mAh batteries last about 2:15, and they're nothing special at all. I would definately try another set of name-brand batteries (try energizer), and if those don't work, simply return the unit.

Huzzah! Ive just been playing SNES emulator for about 30mins and the batterys are still on full meaning its the movie player that saps the life out of them so fast.

10-15 minutes...well either you have some really really really bad batteries there. What brand are they? Or you have a faulty unit. Try some other batteries and if doesn't get better I'd return the unit.

I don't believe in the "you need photo batteries" explanation. There are people that use normal nimh batteries that get 4 hours play time out of their units. Why should some units need special photo batteries while others don't? Doesn't make sense.

Okay, so it looks as though the application running is the most important factor when it comes to the battery life, yes?

Can somebody confirm that Frodo isn't sucking up the old battery juice at a rapid rate? There's no white buildup on my contacts, and I've tried a couple of brands of battery so I don't think that's the issue.

You have to laugh though, don't you? It's pretty darn funny some of the issues that us early adopters are facing here.

BTW, while I'm started - This is the worst joystick I've ever seen in my life. It's like it's been specially hand-crafted to be ultra slippery. The convex surface is a stroke of pure genius. All I have to do is cover it in KY jelly, and it would be complete. Also, I can't accurately aim left or right without getting a diagonal response included. It's just a real tricky stick to tame. I end up having to hold it between my thumb and middle finger. How daft is that?

Come on. Laugh. It's funny. :D

( Oh, yes. Before the anti-negativity GP2X psychos come out the woodwork and start complaining, I really couldn't care less. I'm not bitter. I'm not angry. I don't hate Craig, GPH and the entire world. It's a simple piece of hardware. It's got great potential. Right now it's seriously hobbled, and humourously flawed though. )

Luckily it can be removed/replaced/easily fixed (see trooper's suggestion).

To me it looks very similar to the PS2 Dual Shock (possibly the best pad ever made) analogue stick -- at first that seemed very slippy but after some use (and perhaps wear?) it's great now.

btw, I think the diagonal thing depends on the software and how the program reads the 12 directions. There was some talk about this before release.

You can't compare this.
What kind of digital camera do you have? A professional one?

I've got a professional dimage SD10 camera, which needs 4 batteries.

You can use lots of batteries from different brands - after three to four pictures, the camera shuts down because batteries seem to be empty.
The batteries work fine in every other device. Is the camera faulty? Nope.

Using special photo rechargeables (as I probably said about 20 times on this board today), I can take 50 pictures without any problem.

Why? Simply because the photo batteries WERE SPECIFICALLY BUILT to withstand high power requirements.

The gp2x is a VERY powerful machine. MUCH more powerful than an iRiver or 99% of all digital cameras (except of professional ones).

That's why CHOOSING the correct batteries is VERY IMPORTANT in this case!
