Although I have been told Quake needs to full version at the mo

Is Hexen the same cos I have the shareware WAD in the same file as uhexen.gpe and I get the same black screen and no input I get when I try to run quake

...thoughts?

thanks in advance

Yep, got the SDL librarys, it seemed to install instantly after I ran install (no wait time at-all...not sure it worked)

Tried the Snes emu too...just black screen

Unless they all take an age to load?

The thing i missed with the snes emulator was to put the rom in the root...

Hope this helps

Quake and Hexen work for me. You have to have the Quake pak in the included id1/ folder, and the Hexen wad in the same folder as the executable. They do take 'ages' to load, about 20 seconds for Hexen and 50 seconds for quake (if at all :)), but they do work.

If you just get a black screen with quake then you probably haven't installed the pak files correctly (check the readme), and you're probably not running qlaunch.gpe because you're not returning to the menu (again, check the readme). You'll need pak0.pak to be able to see the menu and get to the level selector area, and pak1.pak to be able to play any further. The SDL libs are not needed for quake.

Oh, and if quake is taking 50 seconds to load then there's something seriously wrong. Loads in 5 seconds for me. You might be thinking of quake2 which takes around 40 seconds.

...ok

Got the SDL to work and Shangaix now works

But Hexen dosn't, I have the Sharware Hexen.wad in te same folder as the gpe file but nothing but a black screen

Do you need the full version

Also some have said that the shareware quake pak file get you the menus but not the levels...i dont even get these, just a black screen

:(

Sure you have the Quake 1 shareware pak in with the Quake 1 port, right? It's not the Quake 2 port? The Quake 2 port is called 2XQuake2 and the Quake 1 port is just 2xQuake I think.

incidently, I got Quake to work without installing SDL...

Definately didn't have it on the machine because the snes emulator needed it

Quake doesn't need any extra libs installing (they're all included in the exe as that's the safest way). If all you're getting is a black screen then it's very likely that you've not pak0.pak in the correct location or the file is corrupt. It should be around 18mb and it should be in a folder called id1 which sits at the same location as quake.gpe (so if quake.gpe is at /quake/quake.gpe, then pak0.pak should be at /quake/id1/pak0.pak).

Check the file size. The pocket pc version supports gzip files, and the download available from the pocket quake site is gzipped. If your pak is much smaller than 18mb then it's still compressed. Try renaming it to pak0.pak.gz and see if it will open in whatever compression tool you use, and hopefully it will contain an 18mb file that will work for you.
