Hi,

I'm a total GPXX virgin so be gentle

Just got me a lovely GP2X and I love it already - even just using it as a MP3/OGG player it's the MUTTS NUTS.

Anyhoo a few noobie questions :

1. I've uploaded a divx 15 minute movie to the SD card and when I go to movies, nothing shows as being on the card ( shows in explorer though ), what type of divx file types does it see??

2. How do you install games etc ?? I'm not new to linux but without a command line i'm utterly lost, so any help is appreciated.

CRAIGIX and the community are to be applauded - this is going to be sweet. :D

Cheers

1. Try formatting the SD card.
2. No idea, I'm not as lucky as you to have my gp2x yet :)

1. Does it have a .avi extension? I think the movie player only lists .avi files. Those should appear whether the coded is supported or not by the way - if it's a format the player won't play, it will still list them.

2. I like that! It's good to hear of people being lost without a command line instead of without a gui! To install games onto the GP2x, you just need to copy them to the SD card then launch them on the GP2x from the 'game' menu. If you need to do anything more, it'll be in the readme.

Here's what fellow newbie me did to get some games working. '/' means the root of your SD card (what you seen when you open 'F:' or whatever letter Windows has assigned the card).

2XQuake:
  • Download 2xquake
  • Extract everything inside the 2xquake directory to /
  • Obtain Quake 1 from somewhere
  • Install Quake 1 on your PC
  • Go into the folder it installed to and copy pak0.pak from id1 folder
  • Paste pak0.pak to /quake/id1 on your SD card
  • Stick the card back in your GP2X, go to games, and select quake
This lets you get to the difficulty/level select part of the game. If you want to play the levels proper, you'll also need to copy the pak1.pak file in the quake/id1 install folder on your GP2X. You won't have pak1.pak unless you have the full version of Quake! As far as I understand, pak1.pak contains levels 2, 3, 4 etc (i.e. turns Quake into full version instead of just shareware with only 1 level). For some reason you need the rest of the levels, even if you only want to play level 1. I think woogal is working on a fix for this? Either way, it kicks arse to see quake running on GP2x so quickly.

Hexen, SNES:

Before you can play this, or any other stuff by NK, you need to install some libraries he's prepared. This is easy!
  • Get the libs here
  • Put all the files into /.
  • Turn on GP2X and go into utility menu
  • Run install_libs
  • Wait til its done
Now, on with the games...

Hexen:
  • Download hexen for GP2X here
  • Copy uhexen.gpe to /
  • Download shareware hexen here
  • Copy hexen.wad from the file you just downloaded to /
  • Turn on GP2X, go to games and select uhexen.gpe
SNES:
  • You should already have snesgp2x.gpe in / when you did the library stuff
  • Rename the ROM you want to play to top.smc
  • Move top.smc to /
  • Go to Games in the GP2X menu and select snesgp2x.gpe
Haven't tried the NeoGeo emulator yet, maybe I'll update when I have. Hope this helps, as I found it a bit tricky to find instructions too.

Yay, thanks for that i3oxxy - I hadn't seen the bit about renaming a ROM for the SNES emulator. It's good to see Super Mario running even if it's obviously too early a version of the emulator to be truly useful. I'm tempted to write a few little shell scripts to copy other ROMs over top.smc to five me more ROMS to play without going back to a PC, even though I know they won't work all that well yet!

Thanks i3oxxy - an idiots guide.

I can already see that the gpXX community is gonna be great

Can't wait to get hold of a dev kit now.

Ahhh... Good to see this forum is back to normal after the last week's hysteria. What a great place this is :D

thanks for the post, scratched my head for a while on this thing, the usb connect mode mounted a very odd drive, and when i extracted the files on the cd supplied by craig viaa card reader, i got the black screen, the lib part was the missing magic

strangely the video supplied on the cd won't play since it says its not supported :)

fyi the line2x needs the libs too.

cheers

:(

I HAVE the libs installed
The SNES Emu is on root
Rom renamed to top.smc

Full Batterys!

I start the SNES Emu, choose top.smc (its Mario World) , I see the loading screen and after that the screen gets BLACK

why?!!?!

(Frodo and other stuff runs fine...)

omg you're right

I tryied Yoshis Island, i thought it would run because I allready saw a movie about it...

So YI isn't supported yet in the public relase?
Other games work fine with the Emu... OK 1-5 FPS ;)

DrMD has a nice exit feature. You hold down the L and R shoulder buttons.

How does snes2x work?

Press down the stick and R to quit in Snes, to show fps press down stick and then select.
