DrMD is not going to be happening anytime soon, if it does it will probably be slower than the GP32 version.  Until the magic hackers get a low level sdk going all bets are off for DrMD.  Luckily it seems that nobody wants genesis for the gp2x so looks like the pressures off me :).  Can't wait to see the Snes and Amiga emulators though.
Now I'm starting to wish I'd voted on Genesis. Not that I want to put pressure on you or anything ;)

All of them ;)
Since I can only choose a few.
I would want NES and SNES.
Since I have a buttload of games for them.

Add 'em up, the Genesis is popular, Get coding :)

Can't live without my sonic fix.

Isn't the ARM core written in assembler for DrMD going to work on the GP2X?

Voted SNES, but only because the question was which you would want to see first... Don't think there's much point in voting for Amiga 500 or PSX then because it'll be a lot harder to make good emus for those, and it'll take a long while if we ever get there at all. SNES then seems like the logical emu since it should be able to reach full speed with sound with its higher power over the GP32, and most other emus that seem relatively easy to reach are already available on the GP32.
I do also agree though it'd be great to get a good C64 emu. Frodo for the GP32 is pretty good but still has a lot of issues with games (well it did like a year ago when I last checked it anyway)

I think most people didn't vote for Genesis because they were sure that it comes out. (me for example ;) )

I think you're right. I did the same. Teaches us not to assume, eh?

Have fun playing with the GP2X, Reesy, whatever you decide to do!

I am an old school gamer (first computer was a vic-20, first console was a PSX), so keen for any of the following (in order of preference)

Amiga 500
48K Speccy
Vic-20
Apple II | BBC B | C64

If a playable amiga emu comes out, I will be in heaven. I have no doubts that a C64 and Speccy emu will eventually surface. If none of the rest do ... then I shall tackle them myself (at some stage).

I'd love to see a NeoGeo & CPS1/2 emulator~ but it looks like there isn't much intrest.

Just read Reesy's comment and I have to admit I don't quite understand it.

SNES and Amiga are possible but DrMD isn't? Or at a reduced speed?

Has this got something to do with the GP2X running on Linux? I mean, the developer of the DrMD emu saying that it will be faster on GP32 "Until the magic hackers get a low level sdk going", makes me feel glad that I bought a Blu+ and can enjoy the wonders of Reesy's excellent emulators...

I'm confused, so please put that flamethrower down <ducks>

Well, the poll seemed to allow for only one vote... Think like this, 100 guys/gals vote, 50 of them vote for SNES, with Neo Geo close second, and 50 vote for Amiga, Neo Geo close second... The love just doesn't show.

Still newB here, just one of the impatient waiting for my gp2x.

Put in this way, if gp32 is not Linux-based while gp2x is, gp32 and gp2x use entirely different CPU architectures, it does make sense to say if DrMD will not be available on gp2x.

Disappointing yes? Then I think someone else may have to pick up that old stuff: DGen/SDL, to at least make it running, just like what they did on the $ony handheld.

That's not what I was saying or what I think Reesy was saying, even tho I don't completely understand what he was saying.

He said, that DrMD on the GP2X would be slower than the GP32, until somone makes a better SDK? I assume that's because the current one is built to run within the GP2X linux...

And I've read that rewriting the firmware on GP2X to allow bypassing that linux could actually damage the memory due to the kind of memory it uses...

Altho I'm sure some clever people will come up with a solution, I'm still not sure if I understand what Reesy was saying ;)

My vote goes for NeoGeo. If NeoGeo can be done nicely on the system, then pretty much everything else I'd want to play should be within the system's capabilities.

I'd also love to see an Atari 2600 emulator on the system... if one doesn't show up within a couple of weeks, I'll just have to try my hand at porting Stella myself.

Well, it sounds like you understand it pretty well. Right now there will be linux running on it and this takes up resources. In order for the emulators to use everything the gp2x has, some "magic hackers" will need to write an SDK that allows the emulators to run wihout linux, giving them lower-level access to the hardware and giving great speed improvements. I think that nes, sms, etc. will run fine with linux, but for the harder to emulate systems (snes, genesis, and beyond) you will need lower level access. You shouldn't worry about this too much, i'm sure these "magic hackers" are hard at work on this already.

I hope also trying an ps1 Emu B)

We 'll see... Even if it will be relased in 6 months... PS1 would make the gp2x the best handheld in the world... psp and ds then are nothing

gp32_console rulz^^

don't get your hopes up ;)

ah, deadlychicken is right about what reesy said. it's sad cuz i was really hoping that a drmd port wouldn't be far off :( :( :(

The problem at the moment is that I don't have direct access to hardware, so in my test code I'm having to use Linux devices to access the screen and sound device.

The problem with this is that Linux runs device access operations in blocking mode, what this means is that if you try to access the hardware when its busy the program will sit there and wait until the hardware is ready. This means that a lot of cpu time is wasted just sitting about waiting for hardware.

In order to get the sound working at a decent quality I'm going to have to run a seperate thread to continually poll the sound device and keep slinging a new sound buffer into it. Then keep track of what sound buffer is playing so the rest of the threads know what sound buffers are free to populate with data. I haven't even looked at triple buffer support for the screen but I imagine it will be a similar deal. Obviously having seperate threads to access hardware eats in to the total cpu processing time.

With direct hardware access there is little or no waiting. Sound can be driven by interupts so no time is wasted. The screen can be flipped anytime you feel like it and you have total control on how long to wait ( HBlank or VBlank etc) to ensure you don't get corrupted graphics.
