Removing Sony's CD 'rootkit' kills Windows
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/01/sony_rootkit_drm/

As part of Sony's drive towards DRM their audio cd's install some drivers on windows which take over parts of the OS and hides itself away under the tag "Essential System Tools"

These drivers stop you from copying the cd by forcing playback through their media player.

Try to remove them and you ruin your windows install.

Sloppy Programming? Or cunning plan. <_<
Think Sony are ever going to stop fighting and allow homebrew on their console?
Think again.

Man.....I guess Sony is more evil than Microsoft...I mean, they are competing with Xbox/360 and now they attack teir OS...Sony is going on all fronts to kill the beast...I just hope Microsft does something...When it comes down to it, Microsoft has more stronger morels and......really.....I just don't Sony and I think they are greedy bastards.....even more than M$.

Wow when money / digital right management talks things really become virtually impossible for the regular user.

It should be possible to remove software without damaging your OS, if your OS is damaged I consider the SONY software MALWARE or maybe even a VIRUS and installation should be prohibited by anti virus software.

I think it's kind of funny reading this and then looking back at the threads about the PSP bricker. There was a lot of "Sony would never do that! Why would they?" Now we're seeing quite plainly that they would do it in a heartbeat if they thought it would stop piracy. This proves that Sony doesn't give a fuck about consumers, only about money. It's a shame that those have become mutually exclusive.

Hmm. Yeah! They released a patch! :D Yaay!

Oh! But read the fine print!
It doesn't actually remove the files. Just makes them visible.

And what you didn't know .. this has been out for eight months on twenty titles!

Maybe, just maybe people haven't tried them in their Win based computers.
But maybe they have and aren't bothered by the problems

What either case will mean to other DRM attempts I shudder to think!

...or no one buys cds anymore.

I still buy CDs.....got a good hardcore band from Japan...and the CD lets me burn as many damn copies as I want! :D At least its not a Sony produced CD..thank God for indie labels!

!!!!!

Which band? What style of hardcore? Any good? Also: Indie lables rule. DIY or die!

Razor's Edge on Pizza of Death Records....they kick ass...they are similar to Minor Threat...in fact the vocalist is wearing a MT shirt in the booklet. If you go by Pizza of Death's website, be sure to check out the BBQ Chickens.

It's a well known fact that most PC based software created by sony is shitty, They often make spftware with horrible GUIs and incomprehensible systems of installation which is par for the course after hearing about this (just one of the many reasons I never bought one of their nazi-esque Net MD players) and as evidenced by how quickly this was discovered, if Sony WAS behind the Bricker they would have been busted just as fast.
