I've not seen it mentioned on any FAQs - does anybody know what file formats we'll be able to use on the SD cards out of the box? Will we be stuck with FAT again? Or will the stock kernel have support for some decent Linux filesystems?

Out of the box I'm fairly sure we'll be using FAT again, however now that we have an open OS adding support for some real file systems shouldn't be a problem. I would expect ext3 support to be added very shortly after release.

Out of the box the file system supported on the SD/MMC card is vFAT (FAT12/16 plus LFN support).

Other file systems (JFFS2, EXT* etc.) could be added fairly easily if you so desired (and would give you symbolic link support and possably more even card ware) but don't expect the GPH tools, USB Mass Storage drivers etc. to support them in there default state as some assumptions about vFAT are currently made, this could change between now and release however as you all well know :).

It depends of the filesystems supported by the GP2X kernel and the filesystem tools included, if it doesn't have reiserfs.mkfs, for example, you can not format the SD in reiserfs format...but if the kernel has suppor for reiserfs and the SD is formated on a PC, you could use it...I think..

Well, I'm sure other file systems could be compiled into the kernel very easily, there is no way I'm going to use FAT, ext3 for me and reiserfs if it works on arm chips, I know it won't work on PPC, or maybe that's just osx and not Linux....At the very least a journaling file system.

Thanx,
Stan

EXT3 is a really bad idea on a flash card IMHO.
I could write a bit about why etc. but this link sums it up well here.

Realy? what benefits are you expecting to get by using a journaled fs on a 1Gb flash card?!? I would much rather use FAT with LFS for the sake of compatibility and the amount read write maintanence on the card, as long as it acts a mass storage device it will work with my Mac at home and my Linux machine at work and windows machines everywhere else
