Samsung have just launched the succesor to the GP's SAMSUNG S3C2400X01 ARM9 chip. Based on the same technology, but with the die size shrunk. It runs at 4 times the speed of the GP's arm9. So in theory, the GP's succesor could be clocked down to support current GP apps. Anyway, here's the link:

Heres the reason we should have started psx emulation already.

1Fps now = 30fps with that cpu
 
I guess it all depends if Gamepark have a succesor to the GP in the wings. If so this could be just what they are waiting for. Personally I don't think the GP has enough buttons for PSX stuff.
 
If you're going to make a new GP with a new CPU, it's a simple matter to add a few buttons as well.

I think PSX emulation, while possible with a next-gen GP (Bleem ran on a 200MHz PC), will not be really practical. I think the PSX used a higher res. than 320x240. Plus, almost all PSX games were larger than 128mb.

A faster GP32 with more ram would be nice for SNES and Neo-Geo emulation, though.
 
The next gp should b sweet then, cos theyll probly use at least that processor or a better one i expect plus the 32mb of ram hopefully. Damn my gp seems crap now :p
 
i think we need some ninjas to break into gamepark (or they could ask nicely :p ) to see what kinds of fun prototypes they have lying around... B)

First: How much do those things cost?
Second: Would they fit in the same place as the CPU is on a normal Gp32
Third: Would fiddling with them mess up other things (e.g. same voltage --> what clockspeed?)
 
It's doubtfull it will be pin compatible with the existing chip 'cos it's fabbed a lower size, and is a differant voltage. I'm thinking more in terms of a new machine. Samsung chips generally undercut intel parts by quite a margin, so by the time gamepark are ready to use the chip, it will have dropped in price. This is the one most likely to be used for a 'gp64' as it's clockspeed is a multiple of the existing chip- making it easy to underclock to run 'old' GP software.
 
If this is released, I don't care if PSP is going well, or nintendo releases another gameboy, it will stomp them all if Gamepark wises up and uses this processor. :D
 
Exactly- that's why I started the thread with 'processor release' -doesn't mean we will get a GP to go with it. No doubt somebody will use it, it would make for a powerfull portable that's for sure. Funny how the thread start's with 'could be used' and end's with 'if this is released' :) I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves.
 
It will be more powerfull by the time Gamepark releases its next masterpeice. It may not be samsung, but I trust gamepark will make the right decision.
 
You know, I bet at that speed you could almost pull off a GP128. I believe the Dreamcast was 128-bit and ran at only 400Mhz I think. But yeah, I know, that kind of power would still take up quite a bit of space because the DC had so much additional hardware. Well, as long as it can be made to play Tech Romancer, that's all I care about. :lol: j/k.

Yeah, it was like a weak PC. GP32 is like a slightly weaker PC. It appears this new processor could pull off a little bit more than 64-bit machine, minus the nice video capapbilities. I think most 3D hardware is still too big or not powerful enough for its size to be useful. But I think if GP32 makes a big enough push into the market, mini-3D hardware will start being developed.
 
:) MHZ doesn't necessarily dictate whether something is 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128 bit.

The new G5 CPU is 64 bit, the G4 is 32bit - the fastest G4 and slowest G5 are running at almost the same clock speed.

Best way of thinking about it "bits" are like roads - a 64 bit CPU has 64 roads going into it.

If the CPU is 500mhz - that would be the speed limit of the road - and only one car is allowed on the road at a time...

So a 32 bit 1000mhz cpu is in theory as fast as a 64 bit 500mhz cpu (it isnt quite like that) as the 64 bit CPU can in theory do more things in one go... (In reality never works like that cos of all the other parts the CPU has to communicate with)


Thats a crappy analogy - but close enough without getting bogged down with babble... and talking about pulses.... :blink: :)

Yeah, the DC had nice video capabilities, and loads of texture ram (with built in x4 lossless compression), way ahead of the PS2 in that department. We are having to draw textures in 4bit for PS2. grim. The old DC had room for 16 bit at a bigger size.

Arm do have a 3D acceleration module that you can add to their chips, and ATI also produce a handheld accelerator chip. So things are slowly happening on that front. I wonder how much power a mobile radeon/xabre/geoforce needs? :)
