After reading the dreamcast thread and the talk about people wanting new hardware from Sega, what other software company, that used to make hardware, would you like most to see a comeback in the hardware market?

Also, I know 3do made software, crappy software, what I don't know is if they are still in business, but i put them down anyway.

Oh and btw, I chose Atari :p

i disagree, Sega ended on a pretty high note with a popular system. Atari didn't, i think it would be sweet to see a successor to the Jaguar. which sucked huge donkey balls.

i didn't know commodor still produced software for todays systems.

Well, the company went bankrupt... I think someone still makes the OS... Not too sure. :(

Actually the brand has been owned by several companies. Amiga was sold off seperately and is now some wacky geeky dying machine based on PowerPC h/w, which is just wrong imho.

Commodore 64 has actually had a revival over the past couple of years as one of those direct to tv toys:

c64_tech_main_c64shot_150x1.gif

It has a load of classic games onboard and with a bit of hardware hacking you can connect up a keyboard, disk drive, PC connection to it. As well the hardware itself has enhanced modes that allow 8bpp graphics, blitter, "mode7" style effects and more, which make the gadget almost an amiga really.

A group of devs actually got work developing for the enhanced features to make a non-c64 direct to tv game for General Motors:

The h/w itself is quite cheap to produce, so it's likely that it will be used in other toys and direct to TV games. Ironically, this toy could actually be a better gadget for c64 hacking than the c64 joystick :p

If the company that is building the DTV (yeahronimo, some music company that liked the brand) would only release a decent easily hackable version or even one that had the needed ports etc, there could even be a bit of a homebrew scene for it.

I was planning to have a hack at it myself but the most recent and powerful PAL release of the unit has proved even harder to modify, and I decided it'd make more sense to spend some time on the gp32/gp2x instead ;)

Further info on this gadget for anyone who's interested can be found at: http://jledger.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=dtvhacking

Cheers,

Damian

Oh yeh, and there is this completely different next-gen console, The Phantom.

Seems to be a custom PC setup, I guess kinda like the XBox but more powerful, and they're aiming to have a gaming service that downloads games as you play them or something.

http://www.phantom.net/

IMHO it looks clunky and I don't reckon it'll catch on, but there ya go ;)

The Phantom has been on the way forever. Look for Phantom or Infinium in the Penny Arcade archives for some laughs.

The Phantom was a scam from day one. It's never going to be released because no one had any faith in it and no one wanted it, not to mention the company is bancrupt and they only produced ONE unit... EVER.

SEGA! The genesis made me a gamer, and the dreamcast got me REALLY into 3D gaming....I even got made fun at school becuase I liked sega so much... :D They are my favorite videogame company, and they should return or maybe co=produce a system with Nintendo.

Oh and don't mention the Phantom again... If that ever came out and your HDD died in it....you'd be screwed over...plus the CEO is known for what I call the "sex style" of scamming his own company, meaning he screws em and pulls out....*please dont ban me!

EA is the biggest softy. If they made a console and made all their own games "only for". It would sell like hot cakes.

Sports big games.
Time Splitters.
Burnout.
Need for speed.
Sims.
So on...

And to EA. THE WORLD NEEDS A NEW ROAD RASH GAME!

Takes slightly more than that to get banned!
