I have a broadband connection installed in my student house and have it set up with a wireless router.

when i first purchased it i sent a note to my housemates saying they were welcome to make use of it so long as they gave me some money toward it.

lately i've noticed a drop in speed on the network, check my virtual server today and lo and behold some cheeky fuck is using my broadband. i know i know, i should just make it encrypted, i will tonight and then the problem will go away.

however, first i wanna have some fun. by hitting run on the windows start menu and then his i.p. on the network \\10.0.0.3 i was able to see his shared documents, which is nothing.

i clicked the one level up icon and see the computer is called peterzhou, certain he lives here as zhuo gets mail here.

basically is there anything i place on his computer that would be akin to those pictures that appear when people steal bandwidth with pictures. or something to just crash his computer and then display a message?

unfortunately the guy has no printers installed or i would have sent a hundred pages of stop stealing my internet.

Just encrypt and forget. If you are silly enough to leave your wireless network unprotected, you should expect people to leech off it :)

You can always fill his harddrive (if shared documents is writeable), just write a batch file that copies a large dummy file over and over...

Or just encyrpt/mac address filter it like Rico said ;)

Dumb question, but how do you check your virtual server?

I've wep encrypted mine, but am still sure that some git gets through....

well when i type in my router's i.p. address into firefox i am taken to a front page where i have to log in with the admin password and i'm then presented with a page on info which details various things including all the i.p. addresses running through the router, thats where i saw the extra user.

lubidog: Try opening up 192.168.1.1 in your web browser
(or 192.168.0.1 or ... check manual)

Then you usually get a username/password prompt, for instance mine are admin/admin. Once logged in you'll get access to all sorts of stuff.

Almost all routers/switches have a web interface nowadays.

Cheers, I've done that and their are a couple of 'other' ip addresses!!!

So they can get through my Wep encryption!!!

I'll have to look into this!

But thanks for the info!

:D

Nope, just one lonely laptop. I live in a block of flats here, a couple of young guys as neighbours. There are 3 networks I can find, all wep locked....
