Hiya!

Been wondering how good SNES emu gets on an overclocked unit... does it get any near full speed with sound? I'd like to know 'cause it's the main reason whether I'm gonna give the pencil trick a shot or not... :p

SNES emu with OpenSNES is playable but choppy at 133MHZ freame skip 3 with no sound and with sound at that speed so slow it's not even playable.

Now at 166MHZ with frame sktip 3 runs smoth and perfect in my opinion. With sound it runs like 133MHZ with no sound. If any thing I wish it streched full screen like DR MD.

So the questions has not been answered. At 180-200MHZ can you get full sound and speed, is it worth it or not?

Please respond for those you have their GP32's over clocked.

Lucky U <_<...

Well, I've made the pencil trick now and my gp32_console runs stable at 188 Mhz in DrMD now! :D
Quite a difference since it didn't run any higher than 166 before!
Now I've tried the 180 Mhz version of OSnes9xGP so I'm pretty much answering myself now :p. It runs quite good actually. Super Mario World runs sort of full speed with sound however my favorite game Mario Kart is still very slow... :(
Sure would be nice to know how OSnes9xGP runs on 200 Mhz though...

Sorry but whats this 'pencil trick'? I havent been around here that much recently.

Also for SNES 156 runs it okay without sound, I kinda gave up on playing SNES though because Mega Drive runs well and I also ended up playing 8bit systems alot.

Well, I think all GP32 users (especially the BLU+ owners like me) are waiting for improvements on the SNES emulation scene... I've been playing with opensnes 0.1 (which doesn't give the white line) and it's boring me :(

Anyone around has any news on better emulators/new versions around anytime soon?

The 200mhz OSnes9xGP is now comparable to Yoyo's Zodiac Snes emulator (LJP) with the Zodiac at stock 192mhz (nevermind oc'ed 240mhz).

I wish Yoyo would do a new GP32 version with all the new sound code from the Zodiac version. The Gp32 version's sound is crackly, but the The Zodiac analog stick just sucks.

As for Super Mario World it is full speed with frameskip 1 and 22mhz 16bit sound.
At frameskip 0 it drops maybe 10% speed.

NOTE the fps display is inaccurate because of the hexed oc. I checked the speed by loading it side by side with the Zodiac version which is when I noticed the sound on the Zodiac was far superior.

yoyo once said he was gonna get a blu+ and then atleast make a blu+ version of 0.3... But who knows if that'll ever happen.. :( It'd be great if soneone just fixed the crackling sound... (of course i dont have a blu+)

There is a Difference of 2-3fps from the 166mhz Osnes9x, and the 172mhz Osnes9x.

The 200mhz is well worth it cuz alot of games run at actual full speed, unelss you do 44mhz sound.

this is of course with sound.

Drak.

The diference between 166 and 180mhz on Opensnez to me is using the sound before at 166 I would have the sound off but now at 180 a lot of games run full speed with sound on, for example Donkey Kong Country 1, (2 and 3 run well but not fullspeed) Mario is full speed. Some games still run a bit slow with sound, wish I could go to 200 but 180 is my gp32_console max...

Something´s saying me that we won´t see an update of Os9xGP... Look at all the stuff YoYo has implemented in the LJZ version: Better sound, perfect transparencies, autofire and other misc. stuff. (not to mention the Zodiac specific improvements)
If he still were working on Os9xGP there would have been a new version long ago. I hope i´m wrong, but it doesn´t look good...

Cool great feedback. What kind of battery life do you get playing at 200MHZ stright for 5 hours I would imagine that would be the longest battery life at that speed right?

I tried Osnes at 200 mhz on a few games and it was still slow and choppy with sound on, IMO. Playable, but just barely.

Some games like Fzero or ISS Soccer are too slow :( but try the Donky Kong ones or Killer Instinct they really run nice :)

Battery life for me is about 3-4 Hrs at 180mhz 2100mah Rechargables...

Stevo.

Are you kidding ?

OSnes at 200 mhz is a lot faster than LJP at ANY speed on a Zodiac.

Just put on Super Mario World. On the GP32 at 200mhz at Fs0 it's nearly perfect. On the Zodiac you have to set it to FS1 or Fs2 to get the same results.

IF your Zodiac isn´t overclocked too. I use to run my Zodiac at 240 MHz, so i´m having very good speed at fs1. (plus better sound, transparencies etc.) I´m using LJZ (LJP isn´t faster, that´s just a rumor).
The only weird thing is that some games that are running excellent on OS9xGP are very slow in LJZ. I wonder why, since both emus are ports of the same PC emu...

Ooops messed up a bit.

Yes the GP32 version is faster then the Zodiac version when both are at frameskip 0, but both need frameskip 1 to run at "fullspeed".

The main focus of my post was the crackly sound.

Like a lot of people here I believe that sound in a game is a significant component of a game's experience and without it a game like Mario doesn't feel the same.

BUT crackly sound is even worse, it actually detracts from the gameplay.

Therefore overall the Zodiac version is a better emulator.
To not be flamed as a Zodiac-fanboy I now must say that the Zodiac's analog sucks. :D

I just don't want people reading all these posts and go through all the bother of modding their Gp32s and then find snes emulation isn't 'perfect' and actual 'fullspeed'.
Those terms should only be used when it reaches the quality of DrMd

Playing SNES without good sound sucks in my opinion so that means neither of these emus are much good. The PSP will likely have perfect SNES soon. If only they can crack the 1.5 FW that us poor Yanks are stuck with :(
