We also asked Chris Satchell, the General Manager of XNA at Microsoft if we could possibly connect a USB keyboard to the 360. He told us that, "we will allow you to plug in a USB keyboard. It's very useful for the text entry. What we're not enabling it for, we're not enabling it for gameplay." So the keyboard is a go for text entry, but a no-go for game control.

shame on you microsoft

Stops people from getting a keyboard/mouse advantage in Halo, I suppose.

maybe if they had keyboard+mouse servers only in xbox live it would open up the market to the PC gamers, id sure buy one straight away.

after all steering wheels are allowed against gamepads................

Ah, but Microsoft already makes money from the PC gamers! They need to attract attention not from one of their own userbases, but from the userbases of their rivals.

they dont make much from PC owners just the one time OS purchase and thier own games, no xbox subscriptions no royalties from games.

Microsoft said that the Xbox would never have a keyboard and it did; by doing this they'd be blurrying the line between console and PC even more, which is something they don't want to do.

because PC gaming is seen as too 'complicated' for many.

With minimum specs, installation, resolutions, other graphics options, updates etc. It sure is much more complicated than just plugging in and playing.

I'm not saying simplicity is necessarily good, but you can understand Microsoft sticking to simplicity for the console market.

xbox is a games console

a keyboard and mouse are input devices, why do microsoft want to stop people from using them on games on the xbox?

yeah, i agree^^
but, whatever! the 3rd party companies will be sure to release something like tehy have for the original.

How similar exactly do you want the new Xbox to be to your computer? The only thing that separated the original from just a computer with TV-out was that it had no keyboard. Maybe this is MS' plan all along, very subtley turn console gaming more and more into PC gaming and eventually no one will buy consoles anymore, just PCs.

It's probably like you say, MS don't want people with keyb/mouse combos playing against people with joypads, as it would be unfair. Also, if people noticed you could plug in a mouse into the usb slot (or any other gaming input device), they would probably try and start shoving various pc joypads and joysticks in there too, and then complain when they didn't work. Much easier to say you can't use them in the first place and ban everything.

I agree w/ mr twit.. its just a big conspiracy

more pc's bought means more copies of windows

That's Daft!

Why do they try to spoil our fun? Games are supposed to be fun, aren't they....?

If you wan't to play on a keyboard so bad just use your computer. I can see why they don't want it on a console. Game devs will get lazy and start to slop up their interfaces by relying on using tons of keys for everything like they do on the PC. Playing with a mouse on a console would be gay.

Are you gonna stand idly by as Microsoft releases the MsHitler automatic update for Windows which makes it so that only Microsoft approved input devices work, is released? :p I think thats the point they're trying to make, just becuase Microsoft thinks it ain't practical doesn't mean it should be not allowed to happen.

Well, the beta versions of Windows 2000 were originally only going to allow software that had been signed by Microsoft as approved, so that they could guarantee software and hardware compatibility (yeah right...). They backed down and made it an option in later betas though, and I'm not sure if the retail version even has the option anymore.

So, them wanting to only accept approved input devices on one of there consoles is not really a suprise...

Anyone know if the 360 will be backwards compatable?

As far as I can tell it works like this: there will be two versions of Xbox360 available. Both versions will run all Xb360 games and have all the new gadgets and so forth.

Version 1 will however only have the functionality to run new games. It will also not have a hard drive. Version2 will be the version that has everything, including a HDD and the ability to run old Xbox games.

Apparantly MS are releasing two versions like this because the full version is rumoured to be about USD$499, and MS wanted a version that would keep the cost down (so people would by it), hense version 1 which will be cheaper (I think I heard around USD$299).
