Defraging Smc

well i was using gpdrive and under properties or some thing there is an option to defragment the "usb mass storage device" have been thinking about doing it for a week now. Will it mess any thing up? has any one tried it before? if it would work wouldnt it speed up loading times and such.

Just a thought, dont flame me onless this has been discused before which i did search and did not find any thing.

I doubt it will speed things up with smc`s being flash based media. The only thing you will end up doing is using up the write count every flash based media has, Iirc smc`s have circular 10,000 writes.

I don`t recommend you defrag you smc. :)

A question:

Say I have 100 NES rom files. I wan't these on my SMC. If I gather then to a folder on my HD, and then dump them to GPMM/NES, I use one write.

If I put them up one by one, do I use up one write for every rom, or is it buffered somehow? (I remember losing some data once, because it wasn't yet written on the card, when I unplugged it... Only to the buffer.)

I dont think youl only "use" one write, the files are written 1 by 1, its not some sort of a rar archive, and the buffer isn't large (only 8mb ram) so it doesn't buffers all the files.

Yes! That is one write.

That 10,000 figure is writes per byte.
If you are constantly changing the whole contents of the card, that would be bad.

I read somewhere that windoze(tm) may jiggle the actual places it writes to on the card to spread the write-delete cycles around.

Rewriting files is possibly a bad idea too :ph34r:
So all those high score files -- killing your card slowly ;)

I'm not sure how this affects the directory blocks :/

It may be that windoze(tm) buffers the directory table and only writes that back to the card a certain time after the file was written. This would be why your files weren't 'there'.
Use the eject function (right click) before removing the card.

you have to press select after youre finished with tranferring files, then gpdrive writes the files it buffers to the smc, the buffer is used to speed thing up
