What firmware do you guys suggest using? Should I even bother?

How do you find out if your machine is a BLU+ and\or the clockspeed it's set to?

Thanks!
Andy

To be honest, I'm perfectly content with the firmware that's already on the GP32 initially. :p

Edit: Helps to mention it's not the European version, and neither is my freelaucher (in the manner that the "Your game is now loading." dialog thingy is in Korean. :D)

Press (L->R->R->L->R->R->L->L) at the startup screen.

If it says the firmware date is 2003, its not a BLU+

If it says the firmware date is 2004, its a BLU+

Do not change your firmware if its a BLU+, the firmware that comes with it
is designed for BLU+, the others aren't.

No longer true.

Get the "Slubman BLU+ firmware" I've tried all of them and it is the best, get it here.

REMEMBER TO USE BRAND NEW BATTERIES AND DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE GP32 DURING FLASHING!!!!

Thx that works great!

What about power outlet? If you have the 3v power can u use that while flashing instead of batteries? I figure you can but I would ask anyway.

I wish the USB provided power ;(

I think i saw some mod for that some where, I'll search now :)

Hi Thraka,

Just to clarify:
and\or the clockspeed it's set to?

The clock speed is set by the software. Therefore any program can set the clockspeed to anything, sometimes even multiple times while in operation. When the GP32 is reset, its clockspeed is set to the default value (40MHz I think), but as soon as you run a game, that game will set it to what ever it likes. There is pretty much no way of seeing what the clockspeed is set to at any time.

The GP32 can run at at least 133MHz (all of them). You can overclock above 133MHz just by setting the clockspeed to something higher than 133, but not all GP32 units can handle it. Some will die after a few seconds (crash, I mean. It doesn't permanently break the GP. Just (EDIT) reset (/EDIT) and all is good again). There is also no way that you can get the GP32 to show you what its max overclocking speed is, because its not a value built into the unit. It's based on the quality of the componentry and build, and a good deal of luck.

All you can do is run a game at a higher clockspeed (using a game that has the option to change the clockspeed, such as DrMD or Mr.Mirko's clock speed tester) and try to play it. If its still good after 15 mins or so, then all is good.

You can do a mod whereby you replace a couple of resistors to increase the CPU core voltage. This makes it possible for machines that couldn't overclock to be able to overclock to usually 166MHz or more. Its risky though unless you know what you are doing.

GPCinema for one doesn't work with slubmans blu+ firmware and I had other issues with it too, I use the aquafish multifirmware with Pacrom thinger. It's best because you can set it to boot a certain filename if it exists on the inserted SMC, so I can have different software autoboot on certain cards, or get into a firmware by holding a certain button on boot. It also has the original firmware (which you can set to auto boot if you desire) incase you're worried of losing features. I think YAFL doesn't fully work, but I don't remember why, that's why I chose the pacrom firmware instead.

Bump. I have the same question. Anyone have an answer? GPBios looks to be just what I want.

Gpcinema does work, get the patched version, if you want to use version 2, patch it yourself, the technique has been posted.

if you're taking the time to tell us the information is already out there, please link to it! sounds less stuck up  tho i do understand this is the wrong forum for this thread ... hopefully a mod will move it

anyway, i searched the entier form for "gpcinema blu+ patch" and didn't come up with a relevant thread :(

gpcinema1 is fine for me, tho my movie watching is limited to showing someone a video i made when they ask "wtf is that thing!?" B)

Heh, wait, I sound misleading, I didn't mean their was a blu+ patch, I meant there was a patch to use it in slubmans firmware, when I posted earlier I forgot he was using a blu+, my mistake. Anyway, it's posted in the thread overclocked stuff, there's a method to remove the need to register.

i'm happy that someone recalls that he's seen this somewhere ^_^
my resistor is actually wrong (doesnt matter, tho) this way it has 4.something V
you could get a stepdown-converter if you were serious.. or calculate the correct Ohmage for 5V->3V
i'm planning to make a connector that sits between computer and usb-cable and has an external connector that you then plug into the gp32, so the actual unit doesnt need to be modded

btw, i'm using pacrom on my blu+ xD
planning to patch it..

Edit: fawking typos

I use the firmware that the system had when it arrived at my house... the euro firmware. I was planning on flashing it to load windups automatically when I turn it on, but the background I wanted to use didn't work, and windups isn't really worth it... I don't really think any file launchers/firmwares are truly worth changing to. It's all about personal preference, and I just don't feel inconvenienced by the euro firmware.
