I have decided to install XP on my system, even though I hate it, but is it worth the risk of "obtaining" it? I mean will MS destroy my HD?

Also will someone recomend good Virus and firewall software thats easy to set up?

Or can anyone recomend a better route to go other than XP?

i don't use a firewall, the amount of hassle it caused when trying to network my pcs meant i killed it.

i use mcafee for viruses though, very good, just runs away in the background deleting viruses as they appear and seems to update every night.

no idea about the possible reprocussions of using a warezed XP though!

I was thinking Win2K, it wont slow my computer down as much, will it?

Anyway thats where Im going, Win2K.

Can you help me with the Virus shit now? Whats the perfect set up for Virus/spyware/adware protection?

I use a version of XP which I think got brought down from an exploding star or some such. It works perfectly, and has done for over a year.

I use Norton for Virus and Firewall, both are great.

no, Win2k is faster, more stable, and all around just BETTER than XP... plus, there's less of a risk of getting caught cause you dont need to Activate it.

not that they dont all suck, anyway. you want real stability, go for Unix (you thought i was gonna say mac, huh?)

Win 2k is all you need all XP is win2k with added MS bloatware xtras added on top.

Win2k is the only half decent os MS have produced.

I had xp installed and de installed soon after put 2k on. Run all the latest games and apps no problems, stable as anything and has been running flawlessly for 2 years without need of a re-install (you should see the size of my start menu bar now :p 4 gigs of apps in my start bar have no idea how many games!) never hadone blue screen or crash :)

I still don't understand why people put xp? Third party software cacks all over the XP xtras...not forgetting the activation bollox and you can pick win2k up at a fraction of the price ;)

XP don't bother unless you really need the telly tubby land interface :p

Im D/L Win2K now. Can anyone give me any tips for installing a new OS? Do I just burn off all the shit I want to keep?

If installing a new OS best install a fresh.

Remove all data you want to keep.
Boot win2k from cdrom, partion & format
Install Win2k
Install service pack 4
Install motherboard drivers
Install Gfx Drivers
Then install the rest

easy as that

EDIT - make sure you do all the window updates as well, to get all the latest securtiy patches etc..

For spyware use adaware and spybot..

I use Norton for anti virus... but i have free subscription.. dunno what the free ones are like...

Get yourself a firewall, use Zonealarm which has been fine for me

from the manufacturers website!

Make and model of your motherboard should appear on boot up, screen where it checks the memory and show the processor etc...

If your chipset is a VIA or NVIDIA just go and get the latest driver sets from the websites.

eg VIA VIA 4 in 1, dunno what the NVIDAI ones are called
