Intelpocalypse


Bad news for the hundreds of big servers at my job and as a consequence bad news for the planet as well.
We will probably have to buy a lot of extra hardware to cope with the load :(

Already mentioned in the GPD Win 2 thread, but I thought it deserved its own thread. Intel CPUs are about to take a significant performance hit to patch a security flaw.

It's a good time to be an ARM device like Pyra, but it's bad news for my laptop. :(

It appears 64-bit ARM Linux kernels will also get a set of KAISER patches, completely splitting the kernel and user spaces, to block attempts to defeat KASLR. We'll be following up this week.

not all ARM seem safe???
 
It looks like it's really critical on servers and multi-access systems where users may execute their code. In client devices to exploit it you need some existing code-execution vulnerability to start privilege escalation from somewhere. Most typical media players don't have such options (although there are some streaming-oriented which look like browsers) as well as productivity software which doesn't even read their own files properly (looking at LibreOffice Impress) not talking about executing the same macro two times the same way (this time LO Base). The biggest problem can be with WWW browsers, as their JS code is awful with security, but who uses modern net without Nosrcipt? It is safer to sit on a toilet in train than to surf without NoScript configured using whitelist.

The good thing is that now it's time for most open source programmers to learn to optimize code after 30% of speed disappears from their month-new computers bought by rich bosses/dads.
 
ugh this is a major fuckup. Our business is based on cloud computing using google app engine (compute, big query, GAE framework... blabla etc *insert fancy new google tech here*) and I guess we will have to deal with performance issues now. If the load is too much, more instances need to be attached to scale up and that means our bill will increase, which the customers ultimately pay. going to be fun to explain to them, why we now need to offload 30% workload on additional instances. (I hope it will not be as bad)
 
Maybe off topic but is the Pi powerful enough to transcode and serve HD video to the Pandora and how do you do that? Kodi?

That i couldn't tell you. I use SD video mostly, the HD video that it does serve is usually to another pi with kodi connected to a tv.

The server does double duty as an internet/torrent box also. I dont game much so no need for anything at all powerful.
