Im after an iPod or something similar, im willing to look at all options, but it must be in near tip-top condition. Let me know by email at loz-trowell@w3z.co.uk or by posting here.

They break easily, my mates one has already started to split in 2, and hes only had it 4 a month

The battery dies

u can get better equipmnt for a lower price

loz mate, stay away from the ipods, seriously.

they have awful sound, crap battery life and unless your into itunes music store the worse provisions for donwloaded songs.

i'd recommend the iaudio m3 (my dad has one)
the rio karma (i have one)
the new creative touch (white ipod stylings but with creative sound quality and 24hr battery)
the iriver (again top quality sound and battery)

karmas and creatives can be had very cheaply and if you go the ebay route, they're not popular enough to be effected by a deluge of scammers!

i used to, except i keep change and pens in my pockets so i scratched the fuck out of it

and everytime i pull it out to change the tracks my m8s call me a little kid for having a Gameboy, then I tell them it can play movies, so they tell me to show em, and it aspires the only movie i have on the SMC is my bag is Sonic, which doesnt make matter easier

I have an iPod, and I'd recommend one.

The headphones I got with mine gave a really crap shitty quality, so I wrote to apple by email and complained. Within 2 days, they sent a brand new pair through my door. Some cool in-ear ones with rubbery ends. The type that stick right down your ear - and they're much better quality.

From personal experience, they are well built. If you're gonna treat it like crap, it might get damaged. But, the first day I got mine, I handed it to my girlfriend... who dropped it on the concrete floor. It got a slight pin-hole scratch in the screen, but it isnt noticable (unless you're looking for it).

I'm using it with a mac, and using iTunes and have had no problems importing and exporting songs on and off it. I never use the music store - and dont have access to it, as its US Only. Around 20% of my albums are downloaded off the net, and go on and play on the iPod perfectly.

Okay, iPods are overhyped, but they're still very good.

Price-wise, they are expensive. But, because of the daft exchange rate between the UK and America, you can pick on up there for around 60% of the price of what you'd find one in the UK. The only problem would be importing it. US Retailers aren't allowed to export them to the UK. You'd have to know someone who'll bring one back from the US with them, or trust someone off the net enough to buy you one, and mail it privately (ie, not the retailer sending it).

The only downside I know of is that the built-in battery only lasts around 15months. The warrenty only lasts 12. So, to get a new one, you have to contact Apple - the batteries aren't that expensive - but, unless you're trained, you can't put it into the iPod without destroying it. So it ends up costing you around £250 to buy and get Apple to replace your battery.

I'd say its a good piece of kit all in all though, and nicely presented.
But, I'm not arguing the fact that there's probably better kit out there at a cheaper price...

...just I havent found it yet. :p

I have one, best purchase I have ever made. The UI owns any other player - you can use the scrollwheel to access what you need in seconds, and set up smart playlists (e.g. all rock music rated 4/5 stars or above). You can make a playlist on the go. You can even play some games and store notes, but that's pointless.

Its main purpose is to play music, and it does that well. I can't see how it's "low quality" compared to any other player. The only thing affecting that is the headphones, and the default iPod headphones are some of the best in existence. You can of course replace them if you don't like them.

They don't break easily. I've dropped them a couple of times with no major problems. My scrollwheel stopped responding a few times but I just pressed on the iPod a little and it worked again, and this is an extremely rare thing and probably specific to me.

Battery life I haven't experienced yet. Having bought mine in November last year, I won't have to care until June next year at the least. Even so apparently 18 months is worst case, and most models happily live up to 3 years without problems. Replacement is about £50, which isn't much compared to how useful the thing actually is.

It's small. This was a #1 factor for me, and the iPod is easy to carry around in any pocket, even coming with a remote control by default. Battery life isn't too bad on a day-to-day basis, but like most owners I put the iPod into the dock when I get home and charge it overnight. It takes 1 hour to charge to 90% capacity.

So yeah, ignore these guys. Most of them are just jealous :) I've completely skipped the best reason to have an iPod of course - the 'flash git' factor because at the moment they're rare enough to instantly make you extremely cool. I didn't buy it for that, but it's got me a few benefits...
