Im happy to inform you guys that ive got my first apache server running.
I plan on runing it for 24 hours a day and I have a 72k a second upstream connection. B)

So if any of you guy (devs) need webspace I am happy to help.

Ohh and one more thing can someone please tell me how to setup php on apache? ;) I know this isnt the right forum for this question or topic but if you think about it it really is. Because I plan on hosting "gp2x" files and you guys are smart so i need php help!

lol, you seriously want to host downloads on such a lo upstream? that gotta be a joke.
A local apache may be nice for badly visited small webpages that are mostly text, but anything bigger than maybe a 1mb should be hosted on real space.

If you want some cheap webspace then i recommend dreamhost. I use them and I get 20gb space which increases every week by 160mb and 1tb monthly bandwidth which increases by 8gb a week for just under $10 a month

That's one thing I'd like to know a bit more about actually; Bandwith. How much bandwith would say a popular website with a few flash menus and what not consume each month (not including any downloads).

Wella flash menu would only be downloaded once per pc and then just laoded from cache instead. I run just a simple wordpress blog using css graphics without any flash or anything and I have only used about 80mb badwidth in the past month. Basically it's a lot less than the 1tb they provide.
If anyone feels like signing up to dreamhost by the way, pm me and I could probably get you some money off

Actually its not too bad I had a friend watch a 13 meg video on it without much trouble. So a 5 meg download every few minutes shouldnt be too bad.

Its just standard dsl from sbc.

How is the speed on the u/load d/load? Sure they provide 1Tb of bw, but whats the use if you dont have a decent speed? Are they up all the time - or constantally "improving" thier servers...? Do they have a restriction of "no objectional material whatsoever" in thier terms(i got banned from one for foam boobs worn on buttocks)? do they give you root in a virtual shell?

Currently im with IllHostit, which is ok, but thier constantly fixing shit. Its slow every once in a while too. i dunno

Any answers off the top of your head is appreciated. Dont actively go looking - i can do that, but im lazy.

Thanks.

You might want to check SBC's terms of service. You might be violating them by having a webserver running on your connection. I know that most ISPs here can shut down your connection if they catch you with a webserver, though they usually warn you first.

That sounds retarded. if they try to pull that crap I'll be happy to switch over to timewarner.
I pay for the connection and its my business what I do with it not thiers.

Actually it IS their business what you do with it. The reason for that is because they're probably selling business packages too that let the customer do whatever the hell they want with their connection. If people with residential accounts had the same privileges, they'd probably see fewer people upgrading to the business accounts. I doubt Time Warner is any different. All 3 major ISPs in Edmonton have these rules, including the one I work for. SBC may be different, but I have my doubts.

Just a heads up.

ftp server is easier to get away with imo.

a few summers ago i got apache working on my laptop and used one of those mydns type sites since i had a mostly static ip. figured i'd leave my laptop on 24/7. within a couple of months, they had the thing blocked. it was fun while it lasted though, as i had apache + movable type going.

as for php, it's probably somewhat like perl...install binaries, tell apache where to look for it. http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/php4install.shtml should help.

finally, do not be surprised when your ELECTRIC BILL has doubled. and it will.

Errm, if any dev needs any webspace and subdomain, gp2x.de offers free site hosting (as does gp32x.de since over a year ;))

Doesn't anyone ever checkout the "Hosted Sites" in the File Archives? ;)

I always seem to get a pretty constant high speed out of their serves, even in peak time. I havent done any proper up/download testing at peak time but i seem to be able to max out my connection speed (8mb)
The only problem you may have is if you are hosting a very php heavy site, like a forums with many hundreds of of users, then you will definitely see some slowdown.

Regarding uptime, when they say they have 99.9% uptime they really mean it. If ever a site is using too much cpu time and clogging the server or the server is having any other sort of problem, they will switch to a backup server within a few minutes while they repair the original server.

With content, their only rule is no illegal material. So no hosting unlicensed mp3s, videos, games etc. They don't mind hosting porn so they wouldn't shut you down for pictures of foam boobs  but obviously if you really wanted to host porn you should have some sort of warning anyway.

Shell access I'm afraid I don't know about because I've never used it. But my guess is that you might not get root access on a shared server (If I understand what you're asking correctly), on a dedicated server on the other you probably would.
