Hi All,
I'm using dvd::rip on linux to convert DVDs.
Following the the "Ripping DVDs for GP2X" guide at
http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/GP2X/rip.htm

I have created a xvid/mp3 .avi file but when I attempt to view it on the GP2x I get the following error:
"I'm sorry, this file fomat is not yet supported"

Just to double check I ran the .avi file with mplayer and it plays just fine.
Here is the mplayer output:

VIDEO: [XVID] 320x240 24bpp 23.976 fps 619.0 kbps (75.6 kbyte/s)
Clip info:
Software: transcode-1.0.2
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
==========================================================================
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/8.33% (ratio: 16000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)
==========================================================================

Am I missing something?
(besides a playable file :rolleyes: )

These are supposed to be supported formats, right?

Thanks

No Joy using reencode.
I'm getting the same error message using clips encoded with reencode.
Here is the mplayer file info for latest test .avi:

AVI file format detected.
[aviheader] Video stream found, -vid 0
[aviheader] Audio stream found, -aid 1
VIDEO: [XVID] 320x214 12bpp 29.970 fps 192.9 kbps (23.5 kbyte/s)
Clip info:
Software: MEncoder SVN-r23784

Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)

Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 22050 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 64.0 kbit/9.07% (ratio: 8000->88200)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)

Since reencode uses MEncoder and dvdrip uses transcode I thought there might be a difference but I'm getting the same error message with either.
This GP2X is brand new with firmware version 3.0.0
I've also tried to play the .avi with mp2x. No go.

reinstall "stable" mplayer+codecs and retry

i don't know which version you use but this line troubles me #MEncoder SVN-r23784#

Thanks GP Mania!
That did the trick.
I had previously used yum to install the mplayer and MEncoder packages.
Removed the packages and compiled them from source.
Tried a couple different DVDs and the .avi's play OK now.

Since I've got this thread going, one more question if you don't mind.
While viewing a movie the gp2x screen looks best when I view it not straight on but from sightly above.
I've tried changing the settings under Settings->Lcd but to no avail.
Am I missing a setting?
Thanks again

fire up your video and press select.
you can now adjust the picture with a,b,x,y

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!!!
(Frustration level raising)
Back to the orginal problem.
Newly made .avi's are not playing on the GP2X.
It seemed to work for one day but not now.
I need a sanity check.
I've created two short clips. Each from a different DVD and using mencoder for one and transcode for the other.
Would someone be kind enough to download one or both and try them on their GP2x so I can get a second opinion.
Is it the .avi's I'm producing or my GP2X?

Thanks Greatly,
wvbike

Thanks for the help emphy.
Which model of GP2X do you have?
Mine has F100(B) on the back.

Problem Solved!
Had a hunch so went to the local Office Depot and bought a brand new 2GB SD card.
Every .avi that didn't play before plays OK now.
I was testing with two different SD cards but there must have been problems with both of them.
I had previously used these same cards for games on the GP2X and they had been OK.
I guess running movies off of them must really test them.
And yes I had gotten one of them from ebay.
Lesson learned (the hard way). No ebay SD cards.

Thanks for all the help.
