I found this game next to a Poker machine in the early 90s. It has some interesting backgrounds that change from level to level, but sometimes you could get power ups, I think there was a bomb, and then there was the ship you could turn into that shot blocks to help remove rows. Anyone have any insight as to the name of this game. I wish I had more details, but its literally 20 years siince I've seen the game and haven't found another anywhere since.

I doubt very much that it was Arkanoid.

- no tetris-clone

- no interesting backgrounds

and the part with "the ship you could turn into that shot blocks to help remove rows" was probably ment as "the ship is shooting out blocks that fill gaps, so lines are removed when they are full"

^has a Pandora clone called Shooter which took place in the last open source console competition. Good game btw

@Streak, its not that, its Tetris and the ship I'm talking about is a power up that may wear off after a time period IIRC.

Glad to be of assistance!

They have screenshots for most games that work under MAME, so with any luck you might be able to recognise it that way. :) (It's also fun to browse just for the suggestions of other games that you might find to be of interest. :p )

Couldn't find anything yet that might be related. I know it's been long ago, but do you remember a bit more exactly

- how close to Tetris it has been? like "basically it has been identically, with some extras" or was it only closely related like "Klax" is. Or was it maybe one of those "sort 3 or more gems in a row or column"-games

- in which way the backgrounds have been interesting? comic-style, digitized photos, more technical computer-rendered, interesting for adults ;) ?

- any other detail that caught your eye?

There is also Nivo's Screenshot-collection where you can download many shots and maybe browse them faster. On the other hand you can not filter there and there are more than 4500 screenshots in there.

It was Tetris IIRC with a few power ups. One was a bomb, one was the ship that shot blocks, others I forget.

As far as the background, I think they were crisp renders or photos, no adult content.

This was an original arcade cabinet, Link? Maybe it was homemade arcade cabinet + some homecomputer inside [amiga 500 / atari ST?] Do you remember , Link?

Considering the people who put the cabinet in, I don't think they had it in them to rig up a cabinet beyond swapping out parts. It was not a homebrew cabinet. These people were looking to make money off the Poker cabinet that was next to the Tetris clone. It didn't have a "knock off swtich" but the Poker machine did pay out, sometimes rather well.

Although they are not related to the one you are searching for (although the first one got at least bombs and some digitized backgrounds at some parts), I want to post URLs to a few Tetris-videos, that i found somewhat interesting. I didn't wanted to post them as embedded videos, as on the one hand only two would show up and on the other i didn't want to spam the thread with videos anyway. Posting them as click-able URLs only didn't work, so i send them as code for copy/paste

Thank you Lomaxx but it was none of those. If anything, closer to the last one IIRC. But that video was insane and there were no powerups.
