Steam on Linux (Ubuntu) is Official !

Hope the client is flexible enough to work on a real Linux distribution.

Great news, wonder if we'll ever see Steam for ARM Linux?

There should be a reasonable amount of quality games good to go, as IIRC most of the humble bundle games have been ported to run on Linux & most of the x86 versions of these games are available for purchase on Steam.

It would appear so - as the article states, they're using it with one right now. :p

Anyway, this, whilst not something of particular interest to me from a purchasing perspective (my gaming is, and always has been, mostly handheld-centric), is very very interesting to me from a more general perspective. It speaks volumes about the way the market is changing, I suspect, and that can only be a good thing.

Yes! Finally... I might just be tempted to delete my Windows partition if they can get most of the games ported over... (A lot of the classics will just use the linux version of DosBox, etc anyway...)

The official statement is that it *should* work across all standard Linux distributions, but for right now they're only doing their guaranteed work on Ubuntu. That'll expand once they're more sure of the system, no doubt.

I was poking around in this a bit last night.

Has anyone figured out how to 'do it'?

1. Where to get the actual native X86 steam client?

2. Installation instructions?

3. L4D2 has been ported to Linux - but I can't seem to find any reference to Linux on the L4D2 steam page.

I've been playing many steam games under Wine for years - all of the Half Life 1 & 2 and derivatives, X-COM, etc...

Porting Steam and it's games to Linux is a great idea - it would be even better would be if they open sourced their game engines, but let's celebrate the incremental gain.

Valve/Steam made the announcement - I want to buy the product and reward the effort - and...

Back to waiting.

They announced it.

Not released it.

You won't have to wait for long. They are supposed to release it within this year. If they are working hand in hand with Ubuntu, I would not be terribly surprised if it comes out at the same time as Ubuntu 12.10. Makes a lot of sense, at least.

I currently have Steam running on my Linux PC (through playonlinux). It works fine, and L4D2 runs fine for it too. A number of games run without problem, check the website www.steamgamesonlinux.com.
