another good idea from me, that is impossible, it seems. but could simcards be put into a slot in the pandora and be used to contact people via a mobile/cell phone emulator, if such a thing could be emulated?
thanks. :pandora1:

Well, I'm not sure this would be popular among Pandora users, even if it could be simulated. The expense required to make the Pandora compatible would probably overweight the inconvenience of copying over address entries or whatever else you had.

Besides, the Pandora isn't a complete cell-phone replacement. At least, not practically. :)

While the addition of GSM capabilities would make this the best thing ever, from what I understand there is very little room inside for hardware mods. It could be theoretically possible, but honestly it'd be much easier just to tether it to a phone via bluetooth. You might want to take a look at openmoko/Neo Freerunner if you want a completely open phone. That project seems similar in many respects to the Pandora, and I know I'm getting one of those when they're out.

Also, I believe there are USB based WWAN devices that are data-oriented and may be usable with the Pandora. You *might* be able to make VoIP calls on them, but most providers tend to frown on that.

I must admit the idea of Pandora having phone capabilities is awesome - all things in one device. But...
If you got the hardware shoehorned in, drivers in place, software written you still have the slight problem of it being 140*83mm, with the speakers on the inside of the lid so you have to open it up to hear one speaker and disable the sound on the other speaker for privacy. [Yes I know you can use a bluetooth headset, but if the batteries go flat or you don't have it with you it really does become an old fashioned brick]

You should look into the SDIO and USB devices. There are modems for connecting via 3G and other technologies.

Let's not forget about bluetooth! I hear that it should be quite easy to tunnel the 3g connection into the Pandora, load up a VoIP program, and there you go.

The Pandora has a USB port with host function, so you should be able to tether to your mobile phone. What that will do to your battery life is another question entirely. Most phones will automatically negotiate the highest possible current from the port (500 milliampres) so that they may charge themselves. 2.5G GSM phones might not be too bad, but phones with 3G radios are real electron guzzlers.

There's a great solution for those who own Windows Mobile phones with integrated Wifi. With some configuration changes you can turn your phone into a wireless access point sharing your cellular data connection. It's a seamless way to get anywhere internet access for your pandora without carrying any extra wires or owning a USB cell card.

Ah! I see we have bluetooth now! Forget about my WiFi method from the previous post.
