Oh neat, it's a ... field.
I'd noticed it passingly earlier when following symbian news, but today I finally stumbled on the hacked i8910 roms scene. They've got custom built symbian firmwares which are blazing fast and highly customizable. The big news recently was the easy installer for QT. Given that they've got proper computerlike access to the hardware and there is a big scene supporting machine alive, I'm guessing that this would make a fine phone for long term following of Symbian to ^3 and ^4. Both being open source (EPL) means that there's no ethical qualms about this. And there should be less binary blobs lying around or atleast more people understanding what they do.

some videos:
The Samsung i8910 (or Omnia HD) was top notch hardware, sells for about 260€ on ebay used, and specwise should have no trouble competing with current crop of smartphones. If I can get the money for it, I'll certainly consider one.
EDIT:
Samsung Omnia HD in short
- Symbian OS v9.4
- S60 5th Edition
- OMAP3430 CPI @ 600 MHz
- ARM Cortex A8 core
- PowerVG SGX530 GPU
- 256 MB RAM, 140 MB free
- 8/16 GB storage + microSD slot
- 8 Megapixel camera
- HD 720p video recording
- 3.7" capacitive AMOLED screen
- nHD (640x360) resolution
- A-GPS
- HSDPA 7.2 / HSUPA 5.7
