Hmm, what about Samsung's new Galaxy tablet? It's smaller but nice!

samsung-galaxy-tab3.jpg

I'm gonna get the Archos 101. http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_101it/index.html?country=us&lang=en

It's upgradeable which is a must for me and starts at $300 so it's decently priced.

Btw, Sharp is coming out with a couple glass-free 3d tablets next year, wonder how much those will cost?

It drives me nuts how as big as these devices are they still only have microSD slots and not the full SD slot. Why? Its like the market is trying to phase out the full size SD and move towards microSD. These are not cell phones, they could have full SD.

microsd have the same capacity as full sd (minus sdxc 64gb etc but they are stupid expensive)

you get the same capacity in a smaller real estate, that added with the number of devices (smartphones) with microsd slots and the number of people having microsd cards compared to full sized sd cards

say what you will about the numbers of each but it's the same about bitching about dvd -r vs dvd +r or blueray vs hd dvd... it is what it is, pick a format and hope an pray right?

I'd be glad they don't choose a proprietary format like sony's stupid overpriced and undercapacity pro duo cards. I'd be glad they chose a common card reader format (although still not "open")

It is nothing like that, that is a poor comparison, unless the DVD is physically smaller. Any standard DVD rom can use dvd-r or dvd+r. Full SD and micro is the same format but bluray and HD DVD are not.

Whenever media is smaller it is more expensive so when you have the space why not go full size and for those who have microSD use an adapter? Unfortunately there is no Full SD to microSD slot so there is no way to use anything but microSD on a device that has only microSD slots. That is a limiting factor, it is bad for consumers. I still think when the device is big enough it might as well use full SD and those that want to use microSD can use an adapter and tablets are freaking huge.

i was talking about dvd burners not readers, +r disk doesn't work in -r burner and visa versa

why stop at full sd, how about throwing a cf reader in there and use sd to cf adapter? same capacity at 1/4 the size or smaller and similar price point, I would call that progress

you can get a 16gb microsd card for about the same price as a full sd of the same capacity. a 8gb pro duo will run you about double/triple the price because it's proprietary, not because of how small it is. I havn't noticed a price hike because of physical size. Feel free to correct me (mind bleeding edge capacities of course)

But a larger format card can have the possibility to always have more storage. It is just physics, the more space you have the more electronics you can squeeze in. This also helps with nultiputpose SD cards too larger size means you can fit other SDIO devices in that you cant with micro. Micro will always be more limited due to physical size. Why use it unless you NEED to?

+1, bring back zip drives while we're at it, those things were even bigger!

Why do you think netbooks are getting smaller..., Oh wait, They`re not.

Trooper
they haven't hit the "can't fit any more crap in there" wall yet though have we? micro sdxc is on the plate for the future http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdxc/capabilities/ so they are looking at least of 2TB microsd capacity cap for now... so size isn't a factor... not yet at least i think that capacity will outlive any device you can buy today or in the near future.

I understand eventually physics is going to step into moore's law and put an end to all of it, or at least dampen it significantly, but we're still quite some time away from that from my understanding, and even then they are finding solutions everyday to get around physics to a point or at least bend the rules.

netbooks are fun ideas for having a computer you can fit in your satchel or cargo pocket... but main reason they were selling as well is half price & half size of normal laptops. If they change the form factor and make them bigger or more expensive... people will eventually just quit buying them. It's kinda obvious why they were successful in the first place... small laptop under $300 when everything else is going for $600-$800. They'll figure it out.... for a living room / coffee table computer the ipad/tablet definitely wins hands down. Out and about... netbook wins over laptop... doing work, emails, typing or playing games laptop wins over netbook... doing some serious browsing of the net, serious computer stuff or playing serious games... desktop wins over all

huge tangent from this iclone though

Hmm, the DVD ROM I bought can burn both, I bought it two years ago, and the one I had before that I swear could burn both + and - and that was more than 5 years old.

I have no idea where you are shopping but microSD is more expensive than full SD. I think you're not looking at the class, same brand, same size, and same class a microSD is about twice the price of a full SD. Sure, you can find a class two microSD card that is the same price as a class 6 full SD card with same brands but that isn't the same, is it?

Also, why would you use CF? Is it faster? Because it is more pricey, probably because no one uses it anymore. Also you're jumping around with different types of flash media, CF and SD are two different standards. Full SD and microSD are the exact same type of media.

All I'm saying is if these tablet companies are putting an SD slot on their devices it might as well be a full SD slot since they have the room. I don't know why you are arguing me me on this, don't you like cheaper flash memory that preforms the exact same? Why be locked into the smaller media when you can use both with the larger standard?

yea the dvd burner format war was almost 10 years ago, depending on how old you are you might not remember it. Just googled a link talking about it from 03'
http://www.myce.com/article/The-DVD-format-war---Should-you-go-plus-or-minus-202/

i shop at newegg like a normal person...

both class 2 microsd and full sd 16gb ~$25

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178196

i can do this all day long if you want... i don't know where YOU are shopping

the cf slot was more of a joke...and you don't seem to be getting the point I was making with it. It almost appears that you are just saying... "yea but never mind what you are saying, i want this, why doesn't it have it?" I'm trying to tell you that from their point of view they see it as legacy format and are wanting to phase it out. They sell and make more of that format because there is still people out there with full sd devices, but to change that you have to make devices with the smaller readers to phase out that technology. I'm also trying to recommended a course of action to make it through this. Manufacturers don't give a crap about adapters and compatibility, they see what is selling and the "best of" technology that is commonly available to the market today. They, and alot of other people see as microsd as better than full sd. If you want to just go off on a rant about the format of sd cards, I'm sure you can start a new thread about it if you want.

I also want to point out that SDIO is gimmicky, if you want a device with a wifi or camera or bluetooth... just buy one that has it. Most modern devices have all of them, if yours doesn't, time ofr an upgrade. Leave your sd slot for storage.

Errm... those aren't comparable at all. Look at the same size/class/brand
A-Data, class 6, 16GB
Micro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211379
normal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211245
32% more expensive

Kingston, class 10, 16GB
Micro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139120
normal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139145
117% more expensive

Transcend, class 6, 8GB
Micro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208463
Normal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208293
20% more expensive.

micro SD cards are consistently more expensive than their normal sized counterparts of the same size, class, and brand, starting at only a few percentage difference for the old, small, and slow cards, ramping up to over double the price for newer, bigger, faster cards.

If you're going to mix and match products, yeah you'll find some that are comparable, but you're also (theoretically) mixing quality: presumably a transcend is better quality than an A-Data, so it costs more (whether you agree or not is irrelevant, it's the premise they make and you need to compare apples to apples).

the brands are reputable and class is a standard, all memory is different, all batches are different, the prices varry from day to day, also none of these companies are manufacturers are they? I think they are just distributors and sell to a reseller like newegg correct? same brand same class different size may be slightly more expensive depending on the day but I wouldn't say twice. And if you just looked at a different and equally as reputable brand you will see the prices are extremely similar. The numbers can be turned in either favor.

EDIT:
same class same brand same capacity micro vs full
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820134821
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820134859

with shipping the full sd is actually MORE expensive, like I said you can twist the numbers in either direction

EDIT: 2
same everything
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208506
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208508

EDIT: 3
same everything full sd with shipping more expensive
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820171462
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820171457

i feel like a spam bot, but if you try hard enough you can find anomalies to support your belief regardless of what it is, I think the reality of the situation is that it's not that much difference

Doesn't matter. If you're comparing only sizes, everything else, including brand, must remain the same.

So? You found one comparison where they are the same. When you can find more SD cards that are the same price as their micro equivalent than otherwise, you'll have the beginnings of an argument, but I doubt you can because on the average micro is more expensive then full size. I don't even know why you're arguing this.

This is what I'm saying, you have to have a Full SD and a microSD the same brand, the same size, and the same class. If you keep those three factors the same you'll notice that yes, microSD is twice the price of full SD. So, these three factors have to be the same when comparing what the cost of full SD to microSD is:

1. Same brand
2. Same amount of memory
3. Same class(speed)

If the Full SD and microSD cards that you're comparing fulfill those criteria you'll see that microSD is twice the price of full SD.

All I am saying is it drives me crazy that they have the space and don't put a full SD slot opting for a microSD slot when full SD is far from dead as cameras still use it to this day, it isn't going away as it is always possible to put more memory in a larger space.

You obviously feel differently and it is difficult to get you to see my point and I've derailed this subject enough so I'm willing to just say we disagree.
