precise psp specs

Sony usually allow dev on their systems, but i'm not sure how you would get the stuff on there, maybe a more expensive version which allows mini cd-rs like the ps1 yazure or whatever it was called.

Homebrew on this will never take off because it would just be too much effort to get the homebrew applications onto the system. With the GP32 it is very easy and this is why the gp32 homebrew community is in such an excellent state

Problem is that you need that kit to run the homebrew software. People with normal playstations cant run it.

Maybe not so much effort. Read closely:
■I/O
USB 2.0
Memory Stick
Extension Port(reserved)
Stereo Head phone Out

See the memory stick wedged in there? They hold as much as a SMC, so there's that to put homebrew games and emulators on.

Then there's the UMD. This really has the potential to be the "next big thing". Sony has publicly stated that they want the PSP to be "the next walkman". They want everybody to own one (which sounds like a pretty good goal from a business standpoint).

The plan is that everybody will use these things as their only portable device for gamine, audio, and video. They HAVE to realize that unless they release UMD-R drives shortly after the PSP, that this will never happen. Nobody is going to re-buy all their CDs and DVDs in a new format JUST for the portability. If Sony is serious about the PSP being THE all-in-one portable entertainment device for the next 10 years or so, they will HAVE to make UMD writers.

Sure, there will be encryption and copy protection out the wazoo, but there's always a way around it. If Sony were really smart and really wanted these things to take off, they'd leave in some sort of loophole on purpose.

I got yelled out before for suggesting this would cost $400, but now that the specs are out, that seems about right. It certainly couldn't be any less than $300 with all the stuff they have listed. Plus, it must be a pretty sizable device.

Also why do you need 7.1 audio on a handheld?

When they say 'walkman of the 20th century' perhaps they mean strapping 7 speakers to your head.

It looks like a very sweet piece of kit. if we get a dev kit, and I do'nt have to sign an NDA- i'll let you know what it's like. Although we don't do portable stuff, only the three big boys, but you never know....

there's no way there's gonna be any homebrew or emulators on the PSP. This is all part of Sony's plans to lock down the way you play your media (mp3s and movies) so it can prevent piracy. I would think that Sony have learnt their lesson now with regards to piracy so I would imagine that no games will be played from the memory stick, unless it is verified through a security certificate.

Sony won't make any money from homebrew stuff, so why should they promote it? Because of the cost to produce the PSP they'll have to subsidise it through the games (razors and blades, printers and ink ;) ). And the discs have got really good security on them (almost taking a leaf out of Nintendo's book with the Gamecube). And with them being proprietary, I doubt it we'll ever see CD-R versions of them....

Basically, if their is the ability to play homebrew stuff out of the box then it's a security risk (and not just for games, we're talking about music and movies too).

Actually on a side note, reading the specs Sony are saying they can get a DVD quality movie on the disc (which holds 1.8 GB). Just looking at those specs, that's pretty poor compression and isn't that much better than standard DVD/MPEG4!! And who's gonna pay for a 2 hours mini DVD version when it will be the same price as a standard DVD???? I personally think this is the biggest flaw in the PSP, if they made it that it would hook up to the PS3 via the wireless link (and the PS3 encoded a DVD to 128MB file to load onto the memory stick) then that would be the killer app. The method they're pushing means you have to buy TWO copies of the film if you want to watch it on your PS3 or PSP (unless the PS3 uses the new discs, which I seriously doubt)

And if they really want it to be a walkman you have to be able to listen to music which means transferring mp3´s from a peecee to the device. And they have to provide the memory to hold more then half an hour of music.

I can't beleive that it is only going to have 8mb of memory, this could limit the emulation posibilities in a similar way to on the GP32

I understand that Sony makes money on the games, not the system. But try to follow my logic here.

Sony wants to sell lots of games. To sell lots of games, they need the PSP to be popular. Everybody has to want one, really badly. It has to do stuff that nothing else can do. You have to get people REALLY excited about the system, because nobody's going to pay $300 for a system unless they're positive it's worth it.

Now they certainly have an interest in making sure the games cannot be copied. Like you said, that's where they make all the real money. So an iron-clad copy protection scheme is to be expected. They also have reason to prevent movie and music and emulator piracy. After all, other parts of Sony produce CDs and DVDs. But in order to sell systems (and thereby sell games) they shouldn't make this protection too tough. Just tough enough so nobody can say they didn't try.

If I were in charge of PSP marketing, I'd have a team working on SNES, Genesis, GBA and N64 emulators already. When they were done and the PSP was released, I'd "leak" the emus under a fake name. What better way to sell your system than by "giving away" your competitors games. 1500 launch titles, anyone? As far as music and movies, they can't honestly expect people to re-buy anything in the new format. It's silly to even pretend that's going to work. Without a writer, video playback is a non-feature.

The problem is that Sony is not as smart as I am. They don't have the balls to REALLY make this the walkman of the 21st century.

Well, that´s because it´s not meant to emulate things. A console of the PSPs power really don´t need more RAM then that.

And perhaps the memorycard is fast enough for swapping.

That would be very risky, if they are cought there will be lawsuits. HUGE lawsuits.

8 meg main memory, 2 meg for the 2nd CPU, 2 meg video RAM.

It's not much better, but there's got to be ways to use those extra 4 meg to free up some of the main memory for ROMs

Does anyone fancy writing an article titled 'The affect the PSP will have on the GP32s popularity' or something along similar lines for my site.

I am currently writing a new article which should be on the site within the next couple of hours

Well, Sony are actually advertising for Emulation experts... however it is believed that it is for the PS3 to emulate the PS1 (PS3 won't have PS1 compatibility, only PS2)...

As Kraahl said, the legal implications for emulating a system they don't own are huge. It would also be incredibly ironic with Sony taking so much of a dislike towards Bleem... ;)

Popularity has nothing to do with emulators, it is completely to do with games. If emulators did make a system popular then the GP32 would be outselling the Gameboy Advance! Unfortunately emulators are a very niche area.. and the "playstation generation" are not interested in emu's in any way.. only a new version of Tomb Raider!!

It looks like a powerfull handheld, but I never really liked any sony games too much. Im not interested in it if it doesnt have any emulators.
