Kickstart $$.. retro documentary needs some coin

See this kickstart page; Jason Scott was the guy behind the BBS Documentary (awesome!) and the Get Lamp text adventure (mostly Infocom) documentary; he's a nerd of highest order, founder of Textfiles.com and other archival sites.. needs a few bucks to make his next movies.

You think he will get 30 k in 46 days? Unlikely.

You don't frequent Kickstarter often, do you?

To illustrate, here's a post he made on the second day:

Having both conducted and helped with other Kickstarters, and having backed more than a few, there's this letter that comes out soon after the first day, where the person doing the project gushes about how incredible it is that so many people have contributed, so quickly. It happens all the time (at least for the successful ones) and almost comes off as a Cliche'.

Allow me, then, the freedom to be so cliche', because how could a person not be blown away by the activities of the last 36 hours? Here it is, day two, and I am 30% of the way there. THIRTY PERCENT. DAY TWO.
(emphasis mine)

Typically though, Kickstarter contributions accelerate as the ending-time approaches, so not only do I think he'll easily manage $30k in 46 days, but I predict he'll absolutely smash his requirements and end up with (perhaps) as much as $150k-$200k in total.

I'm not usually so bold as to make such predictions in writing publicly, but we'll see. :)

Oh ok.I see.Only found kickstarter site recently. They take a cut of the profits or something though?

They do yes - I don't know how much off the top of my head. That (of course) doesn't effect whether he makes his target; they don't go "Wow - you made your $100k! Too bad we take $5000 from you as fees. FAIL!"

He's made another $6000 in the last couple of days (now at $75k) - if he keeps going at that rate he'll end up with around $200,000. We'll see. My reputation is at stake here! ;)

[edit] After checking: if you're successful, then Kickstarter takes 5% of the funds raised and Amazon (the payment processor) takes 3%-5%. It's therefore important to build that into one's calculations when working out one's initial target amount.

5% is pretty steep for a site that basicly only works because people know about it. Thats their thing. The site is pretty basic otherwise :p Still, if it works, is good..

He's up to 85% now I think!

Dose this 5% covers paypal/credit card fees? If so It's not so much anyway.
