Infrared is available from UART 3 in both CIR and IrDA modes.

How would this be enabled?

  • Dedicated IR Cable
  • TV-Out Cable with Multi-out including IR Tipped wire
  • Internal IR

Would be cool to see how strong the IR signal could be. Some uses for IR may include:

  • XMBC / Media Center / Television / Universal Remote
  • Control for Stereoscopic Glasses
  • IR Networking
  • Crude Range detector or time of flight measurement tool

IIRC, there is already a free GPIO line on the LCD ribbon, ready to be used for IR.

I would love an IR emitter, that would be nice to replace my "3 remotes" setup with one software on the Pandora.

That would require keeping a timer and pulsing the GPIO "manually", within your program.

The EXT port, however, has a serial line built into it which is capable of IR communication, just set the mode, and stream your data to the port and it handles everything in the hardware, easy peasy.

That's one of my intended uses for the EXT connectors I've ordered, just plug in a IRLED and control your TV :)

A more complex and expensive approach...

Put in a HTPC. Run IR transmitters from it to the receivers on your AV equipment.

Surf INTO your HTPC from you Pandora.

Control your stereo volume from anywhere.

Meh, far too expensive when you think that a IR led cost next to nothing…

Pretend you did connect an IRDA to the UART...

What software do you plan to use to control it?

minicom, for all your serial (including IR) port needs.

And from there, writing our own software is not too much more difficult. Shouldn't be, anyway.
