How to Win at E.T., the Video Game

What it should have been:

Yes, I did just spend 30 minutes in Microsoft Paint making that. Don't judge me.

I remember the instruction manual poster for ET. That thing must have had more text than the game had code.

E.T. for the Atari 2600 is an awful lot like many modern games.

Just felt a need to point it out. :p

It was ahead of its time, and in general plays rather like newer releases do.

That you had to ask tips me off that you perhaps haven't played it. :p It's actually well worth trying (do make sure you read the manual first, though).

It's a decent concept (for its time), poor execution. Pretty much what you'd expect from a talented game developer who had far too little time to work on the game. When working under more reasonable constraints he pulled off things like Yars' Revenge instead.

See now, this is what happens with corporate meddling. As I understand, the game was developed in six weeks! I'm not sure what Pac-Man 2600's story is, though.

Arcade port on a system that was, by that point, vastly inferior to typical arcade machines. Okay, to be fair 2600 eventually got better versions of Pac-man, but it was still a pretty tall order. 2600 generally did better with original games than arcade ports.

Yes, but Pac-Man as I understand is especially bad, and there's a superior (homebrew) remake of the game. And remake. Not a clone. The remake is so good and accurate (best as can be done, at least), if it were sold at the time, the Crash would never have happened.

I tried to read that guide. I tried. But, holy crap, it's like having my eye sockets violated by a sack of brightly coloured phallic objects. And, my god, it's long winded!

Hm, I played it when I was 7 years old, didn't need any guide but didn't have problems to figure out what to do and how to win.

I didn't think it was hard.

Heh, you have a really active imagination.

"Arari" "cartrage" "nearist".

Warning: E.T. Videogame may seriously impair your linguistic skills and/or typing finger.
