I'm thinking of buying an Iriver H320 from 7dayshop since its now £199, and wanted to know if anyone had tried the USB On-the-go with the GP32..

Does anyone use USB On-the-go from other products with their GP32 (?) and is it any good? speed etc..

(I've read the Medion thread)

i baught a h320 from 7dayshop just to tell you its awsome, if you upgrade the firmware it even plays xvid movies (encoded in vdub).
Oh and the 199 quid h320 doesnt have usbotg i dont think cos its the american version, i havnt even tryed to use it though.

you might want t check out http://www.misticriver.net/
for info,
Oh and on topic, i think there was a topic a while back about USBOTG with a 20gig mp3 player but i cant remember how it turned out, i think the linux that i being developed might use it too.

if i had enough money I would definitly buy the h320, damn its so cool :D

anyways i never tried to connect a portable player to my gp32 (remember you need some extra stuff like a usb hub to get it to work).

I own a 20gig mp3 player and the gp32 works fine with USB on the go because it was made to acces memorycards from digital camera´s (the mp3 player)

My mp3 player has it´s own filebrowser built-in to acces external devices... So I can copy, delete .... files on my gp32 using the mp3 player.... in combination with the gp32 program gpdrive.

Or i can use a cardreader (hooked up on the mp3 player via usb on the go) to acces the smc from the mp3 player to copy, delete... files(faster)

You have to be sure your future device has a filebrowser ....

yeh, I've read that thread. Unfortunately Medion don't sell those ipod clones in the UK.

However whats really been interesting me (in the last five minutes :p ) is this USB Bridge device. It means I could hook up a 40/60gb or more MP3 player (doesnt have to be an iriver) and it should by definition do the business with the GP32.

I could be wrong, But i don`t think that will work with the GP32.
Here`s a quote from that site.

This list is not complete. Any device not currently listed that meets the criteria below should work with the USB Bridge. We will add it to the compatibility chart once it is brought to our attention.

The input device can be most USB Mass Storage or PTP devices with the FAT 12/16/32 file format. These include digital cameras, USB Flash “Thumb Drives” and memory card reader/writers (including Bus-powered). PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) is the standard for exchanging digital images between cameras and peripherals such as PCs, scanners and printers. On the output side, the data destination USB port is compatible with most USB Mass Storage devices with the FAT 12/16/32 file format, CD-R/RW (ISO9660), external hard disk drives, USB Flash “Thumb Drives”, memory card media readers (including Bus-powered), and USB MP3 Players (including Apple’s iPod™ for Windows).

1) I`m sure the GP32 isn`t mass storage compliant, But i could be wrong.

2) The GP32 doesn`t support PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol), Even if it did, It would not be of any use for copying your rom`s over (rom`s are not pictures).

I thought Squidge's GPDrive made the GP32 mass storage compliant? Failing that there is Firefly's driver, but I'm sure it is.

Anyway I hope to be in the US in July, so hopefully I can pick one up and see if it works (and drop it if it doesnt ;))

That sounds very awesome!!! I agree it would be great to have all your games etc on a 20 GB hard drive, however I do have some concerns and hopefully some of you have answers. At this point forget the cost factor if it's worth then I will shell out the cash..

1.) I have noticed that the USB cable for the GP32 is proprietary and what I mean is the USB port is smaller then normal as my GP32 didn't come with the cable so I bought a SMC reader. I tried a few stand USB cables that I have for my digital camera and external hard drive and all were just a little bit too big.

My question is, do you sue the GP32 USB cable and connect it to a USB port on the device?

Or does the cable the MP# player come with fit the GP32? Is this just a standard outside the US having it being smaller?

2.) In my option it would only be worth it if you can run the games and emulators right off the external MP3 player.

I have played around with the Aquafish firmware and you can boot any app game or whatever in the / will NOT load if you make it a shortcut and load it form that directory.

However, from the /GPMM/ directory works fine. However if you name an app such as Slubman's explorer to boot.fxe and hold down it will boot just fine.

Also, the Pacrom launcher and any other launcher like Wind-ups will load it form the ? directory fine.

Either you would need to test a file browser that is a launcher like that should work or put every thing in another /GPMM directory or don't put an SMC in there and just have one /GPMM directory.

Of all of those things above work then that would make the GP32 even more God Like then it is!!!!!

of course if any one else has another other USB to go methods would be cool to!

Yes! GPdrive does, Sort of. But the usb bridge doesn`t come with GPdrive, Does it. ;)

The GP32 needs to be Mass storage compliant out of the box, Or at least supported by the device.

there is an option in the menu to upgrade the firmware, (You can get the firmware off the iriver site) You need the korean 1.28 but menus are still in english.
Then you can use vdu to encode avis for it (they have specific limitations but are very good quality)

The limitation is 10fps, xvid, but high bitrate is allowed etc which is ok for cartoons, but not so sure for Lord of the Rings (?)

How big is the iriver, would you look out of place if you had it in your pocket or do you have to order some of MC Hammer's freshly laundered pants?

I think I've found the right 20Gb, 30 hour, mass storage compliant mp3, player and its.....

!!!! :) :) :) The Sony NW-HD3 Walkman :) :) :) !!!! (ok don't all sound excited, but I'm still going to try that USB Bridge)

According to this link, http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showt...16362&hl=medion
the cable that it did come with worked so they could tranfer data and coping to their SMC and etc.

However, what would be really cool if you could make a /GPMM directory on the drive and not have SMC or just be bale to use a laucnher like pacrom to run off the EXT device as having to copy and delete files from the SMC all the time would be a pain.

Unless your mp3 players menu system has options to copy files over and etc, usb bridge will not work unless you reprogram gpdrive to have a menu system.

Does GPDRIVE has this built in and could you sue like Slubman's explorer as this lets you move and copy files?

However I am more interested in knowing you can run fiels right off the external drive, device whatever.

Sorry to break your dream but I think in order to run files directly from a remote hard disk the GP32 USB would need to be powered, where currently it isnt.

As for the USB Bridge, I think it does some kind of mass dump between two devices, so for a GP32 on the receiving end would not be too good. (It would get more than 128MB). Unless the Bridge only dumps a specifc folder(?) - I need to read up more on this.

That would be cool, or if anyone else out there with the right hardware has tried this and got it to work would be cool too!!!!
