Okay, on the official Korean site, www.gpx2.com, there is a list of all the software that the actual company is developing for the GP2X...
Notice that it says they're doing a Neo-Geo emulator?
Does anyone think that this means we'll be able to play Metal Slug wherever we want?
Fingers crossed...

GPH aren't developing any emulators due to the legal implications involved. The list you saw is most likely the list of community projects known to be in progress.

And that list is a list of what Devs are developing right now for the GP2X, and thats third party Devs.

I would figure that creating an emulator in all terms should be perfectly legal. The way I've always read into emulation is that the emulator is not illegal if it is using 100% independant code from it's original system. Even the DMCA states this:

(3) Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and which require the original media or hardware as a condition of access. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.

Am I wrong on this? I'd really like some clarification. I can provide this link for my argument.

It even said that the KGen emulator was licensed for the Sega Smash Pack. Kinda Interesting.

The program is generally legal but for GPH to make the machine, the emulators AND sell the machine on the premise that it's meant to play roms (because honestly how long are you going to play tech demos?) would make them a target.

It would signal that the device's primary purpose was emulation of other companies intellectual property and that'll get you sued good and proper.
